Grandpa, don't die, you promised to buy in-line skates for me…

8-year-old Barbare is sure: grandfather David will not die, because he promised to buy in-line skates for her! And grandpa always keeps his promises! As soon as he deals with the incomprehensible "cancer", her dream will come true…

This word "cancer", which is incomprehensible for a little girl, is a deadly threat to the Dugashvili family. The news of David's illness has brought his father to the grave, and the mother has deprived herself of a piece of bread spending the last penny on the treatment of her son.

But that's what a mother is for! It's her turn to save David!

"Will you help us? Will you...?", – 69-year-old Darejan repeated incessantly, looking into my eyes with a pleading look… – "This damned disease is eating my boy again… For the second time… I trust only in God!

19 years ago, I already begged God to save my son, and He did! Prostate cancer at 30 – can you imagine it? Then David managed to overcome the disease, but the horror and fear that we experienced killed my husband… He had a stroke and we lost him…

And I, instead of mourning for my husband, am again afraid for my son's life! The damned cancer clung to him again with its vile pincers… Now it has selected the lungs...

And God heard my prayers! After all, He sent you – the Chernovetskyi Fund and its good friends! This is his Providence! God Almighty, thank you!

Darejan wiped away her tears and left the room…

The conversation continued with David, who had been listening to his mother's monologue with a frown.

– David, what is it like to enter an unequal battle with a destructive disease for the second time?

– I would doubt concerning the "unequal" word. The first fight ended in my favor. – With a forced smile David retorted to me. – But yes, the news that the disease returned after all these years is a heavy blow… I must admit that it has almost made me give up and surrender to fate. My mother's prayers and the loving eyes of my wife, daughter, and grandchildren saved me... I decided to fight and live for them…

Although sometimes I think it would be better if it all stopped… My illness is such a heavy burden for them, especially for my daughter Inna… She is the only one who earns money for our entire family. She manages to earn 400 lari and to feed us all with such a meager salary, and even to buy medicines for me... Ohhh… It is unbearable for a father to hang around his daughter's neck…

– You should be proud to have raised such a daughter!

– I am proud of it! If it wasn't for Inna, I wouldn't be sitting in front of you! She is my fighter! She has found me a doctor, and found out about insurance financing… Now she has addressed you… She learned that the Chernovetskyi Fund helps all the poor and sick, and does not leave anyone without attention. So she wrote to you. My Inna doesn't give up…

Thanks to her, I am now undergoing both chemotherapy and radiation therapy at the expense of state insurance. Would we have paid for it ourselves? Never. It's my girl who's saving me! And her fighting spirit reawakened my sense of responsibility to my family... I understood, my family needs me! They need me alive! And I need them... Yes…

– How did you react to the cancer diagnosis for the second time? Did this sound like a verdict or a call to fight?

– This time I was diagnosed with lung cancer of the 2nd degree. I will never forget this day, February 27… When something like this happens to you, you don't think about anything. What I'm about to say is scary, but believe me, at that moment everything disappears – the family, God, and the whole world… There is only you and the disease... You and the death before you… That's all…

I almost gave up… Cancer for the second time... I was literally crying for myself. But for the sake of my family, for the sake of my grandchildren, I pulled myself together...

– At what stage of the "struggle" are you now?

 – Every Thursday I have chemotherapy, and radiation therapy is daily. This is very difficult… After these procedures I feel terrible pain… I don't want anyone to go through this!

– How do you cope with the illness in terms of finance?

– Thanks to my daughter Inna, I was able to start chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Inna found out about the state insurance for cancer patients, prepared all the documents, and the insurance covered 70% of the cost of these courses, and we paid the remaining 30% – 2,000 lari, but don't ask how we did it...  We borrowed from everyone and took a bank loan…

God grant that our efforts will be crowned with success, but this is not all! After this therapy, I need to perform three CT scans to see if any results have been achieved. And this is no longer funded by anyone, all this "fun" is at the expense of the patient... Then I will need expensive medications…

I am no longer able to work, my mother is retired; my wife Eka takes care of me and my grandchildren – we have four of them: 8-year-old Barbare, 5-year-old Anna-Maria, my namesake 4-year-old David and two-year-old baby Elena.

The meager salary that Inna earns, 400 lari, is enough only for bread for the kids... No one except Inna works in our family... And we need so much...

– Yes, the situation is really very difficult… What do you draw strength from?

We are all very religious. Faith in God gives us strength. It is only thanks to the Lord and his grace that I have come to this day. The Lord always gives a man a burden that he can bear, and I suppose he thinks I can bear it. It's up to Him, and I'll try not to screw it up…

– You do not give up, you believe in recovery, and want to increase the score in the fight against cancer to 2:0. What will you change in your life after this?

– I will open my heart wider to the love to God and my family... Faith has always been a lifesaver for me, and now, a sincere prayer, uttered in the soul, lighten my heart, and soothe the unbearable pain…

And also, I will fulfill my cherished dream: I will engage in agriculture and cattle breeding.  Before my prostate cancer diagnosis 19 years ago, I was a cattle rancher. But, as a result of my illness, I had to give up this activity and look for easier work. So I became a driver…  As soon as I get rid of my current illness, I will fulfill my dream and return to my favorite business…

– You have talked so much about your family, tell us a little about your wife Eka.

– We'd better not, or you won't be able to stop me! Eka is my angel in the flesh! She put her life on me – this is the second time she has endured and nursed me, a cancer patient… All my mood swings after chemo and radiation therapy, all my pain-induced aggression, go to her…
But Eka tolerates everything, she understands that it is the pain in me that speaks… And that I love her more than anything in the world, and that I will never hurt her… When the pain goes away, I hug her, apologize, and say that I live and breathe only because of her…

– Eka, how does it feel to face the danger of losing your beloved husband for the second time?

Eka (45 years old): It is very, very scary. As David said, we almost gave up when we learned that the disease had returned a second time. But thanks to Inna, who did not accept her father's diagnosis, we started fighting again. After all, David is still very young: he is only 48 years old. We all need him! Georgia needs him!

– And how is David's mother-in-law, Darejan?

– She's going through it even harder than David himself… She even refuses to spend her pension on herself, keeps trying to save on her medications and spend money on David, and on the family. But she herself is very ill – her blood pressure is high; she has neurosis and stomach problems... And Darejan keeps saying: now it's not my turn, now we need to save David!

– Tell us a little about your daughter Inna, who asked us to help David.

– Inna is a real fighter! You know, she has always wanted to go to the Police Academy since high school! But, unfortunately, she failed to realize this dream. We have never been able to pay Tutors, and now Inna works for the whole family, instead of her studies…

– How do grandchildren perceive their grandfather's illness?

– Ask them, see how they are waiting for their turn to talk.

– Guys, tell us, but only in turn!

Let's start with the only boy, David (4 years old), what kind of person is your grandfather?

David (4 years old): The best! He always plays with us; does not forbid anything; he is my friend! Also, he is called like me:David. But he is David, and I am Datuna, because I am still small.

Does your grandfather buy you candies or toys?

David (4 years old): No longer, and before he always bought me ice cream and candies. He has no money now – he does not work, and all the time he goes to the doctors…

Barbare (8 years old): Yes, my grandfather is ill, he is always in pain… We try not to disturb him, not to make any noise. But even if we make noise, he doesn't scold us.

– Are you trying to please your grandfather?

Barbare (8 years old): Yes, we always hug and kiss him. I sometimes even make tea for him when grandma doesn't have time.

And he takes us for walks. My mother always has no time, she works and works, morning and night… And grandpa takes us all and we go for a walk in the yard.

And he promised that when he got well and started working again, he would buy me roller skates and a skateboard. He knows I dream about them…

David (4 years old): And my grandfather promised me a big car, as adults have!

Anna-Maria (5 years old): And I myself make gifts for my grandfather, draw hearts for him and put them under his pillow. I'm not very good at it, but he likes it. And now I will draw you a pink heart. I only have two markers: pink and green…

– And you, Elena (2 years old), what do you please your grandfather with?

Elena (2 years old) was confused, and did not answer, just hung on David's neck.

 – You guys are the best grandkids! And you know, your grandfather will fulfill all his promises!

– David, you are a happy person. You have such a selfless and loving family. You must fight for them! – What can we do for you?

Instead of David, Eka spoke again – David is so stubborn! He will not tell you anything...

We applied to the Fund with the hope that it might be possible to raise funds at least to pay for a CT scan, at least for one instead of three… This is the most important thing for us right now! Otherwise, due to lack of money, David may refuse further treatment!  And then… Everything will depend on the results of the tomography…

Only extreme need prompted us to apply to the Fund… David was against it; he didn't want to bother people… But we have a desperate situation, there is no one to help us: everyone has already helped us as much as they could from the very beginning, as soon as it became known that David had cancer again. All of Inna's small salary is spent on the most necessary needs, utilities and food. I'll be honest. We only buy bread for children, but we... starve ourselves…

But all this is nothing, the main thing for us is that David is healthy again. Then my daughter will not be the only one fighting for our family – her father will be with her.
