I love him so much! – the eyes of little Giorgi (8-year-old) are getting wet of tears. I have nothing to answer. I wish the ground would swallow me facing his pure and inquisitive childish gaze. Giorgi’s brother Nikoloz (10-year-old) is seriously ill, and it’s not likely that anybody can promise Giorgi that his brother would hug him soon.

Cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus - that was the doctors’ verdict that fell on the Kavtaradze family 10 years ago. Cruel fate brought them a lot of suffering. Grandmother Zalina (53-year-old), was lucky to defeat breast cancer. Her son, Nikoloz’s father, Giorgi (30-year-old) is a 2nd category disabled - he lost his eye due to an accident when he was 4. Nikoloz’s mother Mariam (29-year-old) can hardly stand on her feet, she often loses consciousness and suffers from severe headaches. Nikoloz has 3 brothers: Sandro (3-year-old), Luka (6-year-old) and Giorgi (8-year-old). They also had a sister Liza, but Giorgi and Mariam lost their firstborn baby when she was only three months old. A severe flu killed her.

All these misfortunes descended upon this kind Georgian family. But God heard their prayers and directed them to our Fund. He directed them to us, friends, so that we could open our hearts for mercy and help our compatriots to overcome the misfortunes!

- Zalina, what trouble made you address us?

Zalina: My God, they are countless. Our family had to go through so many troubles! But the most important thing now is to improve the condition of my eldest grandson Nikoloz (10-year-old). Believe me, I don't want anything, if only he could sit at least! My heart breaks when I look at him!

- Could you tell me more about him?

Zalina: I can’t talk about him without crying, - the poor woman sobs, - our Nikoloz was born 7 months premature and spent 3 months at the intensive care unit. The doctor’s verdict was terrible: cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus. Our poor boy was operated 4 times. Three times it was a cerebral shunt surgery, and once, when he was 5 years old, his foot was operated, because he had one leg shorter than the other. My poor boy, he had to go through lots of suffering! He cannot sit because of the problems with his hip joint. He needs a spinal x-ray and maybe one more operation will be necessary.

- Zalina, what are the prognoses?

Zalina: In such a hard condition the prognoses are not optimistic. But each case is different, and his condition can be improved. We visit a rehabilitation center and have sessions with various specialists, a massage therapist comes to our home. The state finances this program. But this is not enough, it would be great if the specialist came to our home too, but, unfortunately, we can’t afford this.

- Zalina, it is you who raises Nikoloz, am I right?

Zalina: Yes, my daughter-in-law went through a big stress, when her firstborn baby died. It was a girl, Liza. Our little angel is in the heaven now. (Cries) She was just three months old when she caught the swine flu and the doctors could not save her. And I am sure the anxiety caused Mariam’s premature labor and this is the reason why Nikoloz was born like that. His younger brother Giorgi (8-year-old) was born with problems too: his fontanelle did not close, so we had to insert plastic. Thank God it does not bother him, the only thing is that the hair doesn’t grow there.

Can you imagine how much misfortunes my daughter-in-law had to go through? The poor one! Now she suffers from severe headaches, she has low hemoglobin and blood pressure, she often loses consciousness, and we haven’t got any chance to visit the doctor yet. She is even unable to talk! But she wanted to talk to you so much!

You can see, she is unable to take care of the ill child. That’s why Nikoloz is with me all the time. Not long ago, in 2012, I was treated for breast cancer. They managed to stop spreading of metastasis, but the surgery and chemotherapy affected my health. Still I have to lift the child, hold him - he needs special care.

- What would you advise mothers and grandmothers in the same dire situation as yours?

Zalina: Patience, patience and patience again! It is difficult, but if the God gave us this cross to carry, he will give us the strength for it too.

- What particular help do you need most of all now?

Zalina: Any help, literally, any. Food, diapers. A wheelchair for Nikoloz, the special one.

To be honest, it is so difficult. My son is a 2nd category disabled and he can’t find a permanent job, and the children, especially Nikoloz, need lots of things. The allowance is not enough. An allowance for a large family, my pension, my son’s and grandson’s disability pension are in total 900 GEL for three sick adult persons and four little children, one of whom is seriously ill!

In addition, our fridge and washing machine went out of order, it’s a bit of a handful.

- You say that your son Giorgi is disabled, can you tell more about your son and your daughter-in-law? One can notice warm and friendly relationship in your family...

Zalina: (Proudly) Yes, it’s true! Both Giorgi and Mariam are my children! My husband left me with three children in my arms and I raised them alone, earning as much money as I could, I even used to sell stuff at the market place. My mother-in-law was a wonderful woman, she helped me a lot, so I also try to be a perfect mother-in-law for Mariam. I really know how important it is. She lived nearby, my son and me loved her, so they fell in love and got married at a very young age - being 18 and 17 years old, and I was very glad that they got married.

My son lost his eye when he was 4 years old. The children found a syringe somewhere and started throwing it! Can you imagine what a horror! So somehow it hit Giorgi’s eye and the doctors did not manage to help him, so he became disabled.

- Does anybody help you? Relatives, for instance?

Zalina: There is nobody who can help us. I have two daughters as well, but they are in need, they also have little children. My sister gave us this house, thank God we do not have to pay for the rent. We fit here somehow. My sister has a sick daughter too, and if they need this house, I have no idea where to go. We sold everything to pay for Nikoloz’s treatment and we have no place to live.

- Have you ever thought that such misfortune would happen to you?

Zalina: You know, I got married, I gave birth to three children, I put them on their feet, I did everything I could and even more. I hoped they would have a happy future, and you see how it turned to be. My son got disabled, my daughter-in-law is sick, my first grand daughter died, my eldest grandson is in a terrible condition. Where did all these misfortunes come from to fall on us? I keep my spirits up, I don’t lose hope and trust in God, and I believe that once everything gonna be all right.

- What do you believe in? In what do you see the salvation?

Zalina: Only in faith! I believe that all the trials are given to us not by chance, and you have to go through them with dignity! Lord will reward you for suffering!

- Did you address anybody for help? To the local government, for instance?

Zalina: In our situation it is almost impossible to cope by ourselves. Thanks to the state, for financing the rehabilitation of Nikoloz. Sometimes, the Town Hall helps us with food or wood. There is also an organization involved in city greening which is located nearby, - they also help us from time to time. I am so grateful to everybody, who helps us, but you know, it’s a drop in the ocean, when there are two disabled, four little children and their sick mother in the family.

- Do you believe in the kindness of strangers?

Zalina: Of course, I do! Otherwise, I would not have addressed you. My daughter-in-law follows your page on Facebook, reads me your posts, we see the way how complete strangers keep helping each other. Thanks to your Fund, the hearts of religious and compassionate Georgians join to help their neighbor.

- Zalina, tell me about your grandchildren, please. Do they go to school and kindergarten?

Zalina: Sandro (3-year-old) is supposed to go to the kindergarten this year, but due to the virus, the opening has been postponed ... Luka (6-year-old), will go to the first grade, but he is at home yet, for the same reason, but George (8 years old) ) - he is a real fellow! We are proud of him, he studies well, he also attends Georgian folk dancing classes, he loves dancing! Unfortunately, Nikoloz (10-year-old), due to his illness can’t tolerate a noise. He spends a little time with his brothers, but they want to play with him so much!

- What do your children eat? What is their everyday diet?

Zalina: What diet are you speaking about when the whole money goes on Nikoloz’s medications? Fried potatoes, pasta. They do not remember the taste of real meat, a delicacy for them are frozen khinkali. But is it food? Only God knows what they are made of.

- Zalina, I’d like to talk to the children now. Guys, can I talk to you? Sandro, dear, do you want to go to the kindergarten?

Sandro (3-year old): Yes! Granny says there are many children and toys there! It is fun! I want to have many toys too!

- What toy do you want to have most?

Sandro (3-year old): A white car where you can sit and go. My neighbor boy has one, I want to have the same...

- Sandro, which of your brothers do you love the most?

Sandro (3-year old): All, all, all! And mommy, and daddy and granny! But most of them - Nikoloz, I think. I am so sorry for him, he is sick.

Luka (6-year-old): I love Nikoloz very much too. He is our favorite brother, he is sick and we have to take care of him!

- Fine, guys! Luka, do you want to go to school?

Luka (6-year-old): Yes, of course, I am already big! But it’s a pity that there will be less time left for games, I love to play football with the boys in the yard so much!

- Do you like football? - What do you want to be when you grow up?

Luka (6-year-old): Well… maybe a football player… or a boxer. A sportsman, in one word. (laughs)

- Do you have a dream? What do you need to feel happy?

Luka (6-year-old): I want to have a bicycle! Two! One for me and one for my brother, so that we could race together!

Giorgi (8-year-old): One would be enough. We would ride it in turn. It’s my cherished dream too, to have a bicycle and a mobile phone. An iPhone!

- Why the iPhone?

Giorgi (8-year-old): All the children have one, and I don’t. The Iphone is like a small computer, you can even listen to the on-line lessons with it.

- Do you miss school?

Giorgi (8-year-old): Very much, I miss my friends. I like studying. Most of all I love Math and English!

- What do you want to be when you grow up?

Giorgi (8-year-old): I don’t know. Luka and I want to become sportsmen. The most famous and rich. We will earn a lot of money, so we could cure Nikoloz for sure.

- Do you love your brother?

Giorgi (8-year-old): Yes, very much! But you know, when I hug him, he cries. It hurts him. How is it possible, ma’am? I just want to show him how much I love him!

- I am sure he knows it. And he will get well for sure. Thank you for your time guys! Now I want to ask your granny some questions.

-What do you think, you need most in your home?

Zalina: A special wheelchair with a toilet for Nikoloz. I can’t lift him up anymore! I have no strength...

The fridge is out of order, only a freezing mode works, both in the upper and lower cameras. If you make dinner, it should be a one-day dinner, because there’s no room to store the food. Our washing machine is old, it washes badly and it fits only 6 kilos. But we are seven people living here, can you imagine how much washing we have?

We would be grateful for any help, because all our income is spent on my eldest grandson’s needs, and the younger ones are deprived of everything. They understand it and do not complain. But my heart breaks when I see how undernourished they are, how they look at yummies in the shop, how they look at someone else’s toys.

- What is your biggest dream?

Zalina: My only dream is at least some improvement of Nikoloz’s condition, he is my pain, I keep thinking about him day and night. If he could sit, it would be great. But he needs more examinations and probably one more operation. God, give us strength, patience and humility! We only hope for the help of the kind and generous friends of your Fund - you have already helped to so many miserable people!
