They live in desperate poverty, any second at the risk of being buried under the ruins of their own home... It was a distressing picture to see even for the worldly-wise Fund employees. We just shuddered when we saw this little doll with huge beautiful eyes in desperate poverty, a dilapidated house, with a collapsed wall... And Nini, kept frolicking without noticing it: “Look what a puppy I have! Isn't it wonderful?"

A kindest 52-year-old Georgian grandmother, forgetting about herself, about the terrible pains in her chest and heart,  gives the remaining energy, as well as the last crumb of bread, to her dear granddaughter asking God to let her stay alive a little longer!

Nino herself is starving. Usually, she goes to bed hungry ... And we are witnesses of this!

“I don't want anything, if only my girl, my little Nini, were healthy and happy,” the poor woman cries bitterly. - I live for her! I will do anything, so that the child does not have to endure hardships ... You see, I often just have nothing to feed her! "

- Nino, tell me please, what problem brought you to us?

Nino: I don’t even know where to start ... Our situation is really terrible, otherwise I would not have addressed you. It happens so that I have been raising my three-year-old granddaughter Nini alone. Money is sorely lacking, even for food. I often go to bed hungry, if only my baby was full ...

- Can you tell us in more detail how it happened?

Nino: Nini's parents divorced before her birth. It happened so. Human heart is a mystery. They did not understand each other. My daughter Ani was pregnant, but her husband was against of having children. So he left Ani with a baby in her arms. She is a very sensible girl, an athlete. She was professionally engaged in freestyle wrestling. They even invited her to India as a coach, promised to pay her a good salary. And she left, what else could she do? Baby Nini was only one-and-half months old then. At the beginning, she did send us money, then something went wrong there, and she came back. But she had to keep the child somehow - I don't work, because of my age and my health condition ... Here, in the village, there is no work. Ani left for Tbilisi and has been sticking around ever since, poor one, working sometimes as a waitress, sometimes as a saleswoman in a grocery store. She’s on minimum wage, and she still has to pay for a rented room and buy something to eat.

- Why wouldn’t you go there too?

Nino: Oh, what are you talking about! - the woman threw up her hands - you should have seen this kennel where she lives! A tiny room, no conditions, not even heating! How can you keep a child there? There is at least fresh air here.

- You mentioned some health issues. Are you sick, Nino?

Nino: Two years ago, I was diagnosed with a malignant tumor of the breast, the second stage. I underwent radiation and chemotherapy, and they amputated my breast. They barely managed to save my life. But now I have female problems. I will need to be operated on once again soon...

- Do you need any help with treatment?

Nino: No, it’s financed by state. I have already applied and I’m on a waiting list now. I addressed you because my baby, my Nini, lives in such conditions, in these ruins. And sometimes I just have nothing to feed her. If not for the extreme need, I would never have bothered you ...

– Does anybody help you? Do you have relatives?

Nino: My husband passed away a long time ago, and I used to sell some small stuff at the bus station. I have two sisters, but they have their own families. How can they help us? Their life is hard too... They can only help with some food from time to time. I have also another daughter, the eldest one, who has four children! You understand that in a hard time like now it becomes very difficult not only to help other people, but even to stay alive yourself.

- Have you ever thought that you would find yourself in such situation?

Nino: Who can imagine such a thing? We used to have just an ordinary family. The eldest daughter got married, gave birth to four children ... I thought that the same would happen to the youngest... But everything turned out in a different way. Your heart breaks when you see that your child's life does not go well, that she suffers ... Well, what can you do, everything is God's will. I have my baby, my miracle, my Nini. A ray of sun in the darkness... I have a dear person to live for.

- We are so sorry! Did you address anybody for help? The local government, for instance?

Nino: The state has financed my treatment, and we also get an allowance of 150 GEL... To be honest, only a half of this amount, because we had to take money in advance for medications and other unforeseen expenses. I addressed the local government, asking them to repair my house, at least the roof, but they refused.

- Is this all your income? But how do you live?

Nino: We exist... We survive... My daughter sends us some money, or rather, her entire salary minus the rent and the expenses for the food and transportation. But her salary is only 500 GEL. You can see yourself what remains after she pays 100 GEL for her tiny room ...

- What does the baby eat?

Nino: Mainly soups, just water-based, of course. Fortunately, they know me in the grocery shop, so that they loan me some stuff, and I pay for it bit by bit ... But it seems this debt will never end.

– Do you believe in the kindness of strangers?

Nino: I do. Mrs. Marine, the wife of a local deputy, brought me a huge package of groceries when I was operated on, ... I cried with joy, and surprise ... The Lord always gives you help when it seems everything goes wrong.

- Are you religious?

Nino: Yes, of course! I believe that everything in this world happens for a reason. We are all children of the Lord, He loves all of us and hears our prayers. I go to church and pray at home too ...

- Nino, does this house belong to you?

Nino: Yes, if you can call these ruins a house. It requires a major overhaul. One wall has completely collapsed, the roof leaks, the wind is blowing from all cracks ... I am afraid that one day it will just collapse upon our heads.

– What, do you think, you need most in your home?

Nino: First of all, of course, food for my little Nini.  There can be no question of good nutrition with our income. But she is growing up, she needs vitamins. It is very difficult to heat our little room in winter. Look in what condition the walls are! We really need a gas heater and a washing machine. With my illness, it is almost impossible for me to wash by hands ... It would be nice to have a refrigerator ... There is even no room to store the soup, I have to cook it for one meal only, otherwise it will turn sour ... There is nothing to sleep on ... There is a couch and a broken wooden bed. Our friend gave it to us. I feel so awkward to ask for help. The Lord know that I addressed you only for the sake of the child!

- How did you learn about our Fund?

Nino: Good people told me about you. They said that you really help those who found themselves in a dire situation... They advised me to address you. Your Fund has so many good friends! I wrote to you in the hope that they will not remain indifferent to our trouble...

- Nino, tell me, please, about your grandchild.

Nino: My little angel ... Mother named her after me. My joy, my ray of sunshine! She goes to the kindergarten, she really likes it there. She says it's fun, there are a lot of children and toys. I can't even afford to buy her a doll ... (He sighs heavily.) She likes to listen to music, watch clips on YouTube. She dances and sings along. She's just a miracle!

- Can I talk to her, please?

Nino: You know, she still speaks poorly, incoherently, distorts words, but, of course, you can ask her questions if you want.

- Nini, what is that? Is it your dog?

Nini (3-year-old): It’s my friend!

- What’s its name?

Nini: Bubu! He’s the best!

- Nini, what do you like most of all?

Nini: Sweets! I want many, many sweets!

- Chocolate?

Nini: Yes, I love chocolate! But granny doesn’t buy it...

- What are you dreaming about? What do you want most of all?

Nini: Many, many toys! As in my kindergarten. I like dolls and balls! I like to play ball.

- How little a child needs to be happy ... Dolls, sweets and a ball ... And what are you dreaming about, Nino?

Nino: I pray to the Lord asking to give me health and strength to put my baby on her feet. She is the meaning of my life. I look into the future through her eyes. When she runs up to me, she says: "Granny, I love you very, very much, like that!" - and she hugs me with her little arms with all her might, I forget about all illnesses and adversities ... I will give everything to see her grown up, healthy and happy!
