There are five little children in the Bagalishvili family. The sixth is about to be born. Four children are sick. Not helplessly yet. But they’ll become soon. When there is no money to buy them food or clothes, it is in no way possible to carve out funds for a doctor, for tests, for the trip to the hospital, for medications. The monthly social allowance is enough either for flour and cheap food, or for the treatment of one child. Mom Nunu (35 years old) told me about these terrible things. And I try to imagine what a choice she faces every day. “It feels like they gave me a gun and said: "Choose who to kill." If you want to treat Tamara and Tengo - Temuri, Tika and Tornike will starve to death. And if you want your children to be well-fed (actually “well-fed” - this is too strong word), then it will be impossible to treat them. Something like that". Have you ever faced such a choice? What would you choose? Please advise!

Now let's take a closer look. First, we will introduce you to the children of the Bagalishvili family.

These are still the youngest members of the family: Tengo is 3 years old, Tamara is 7. They have hypothyroidism - a dysfunction of the thyroid gland. Actually, they need to be tested monthly and they have to take medications under medical supervision. This will make their disease pass. And if not, it will cause irreversible processes. The children already have intellectual disability and developmental delay. This disease is not yet fatal, but the consequences may be pretty serious. It’s all because it is impossible to feed them and treat them with a social allowance only! Their mom says that the pills are inexpensive, but they must be taken strictly as prescribed by the doctor in the proper doses. You can't do self-medication. It’s not a plantain leave you can put on your sore.

This is Tornike He is 8 years old. The problems of his little brother and sister are not visible yet, but his illness is visible. He has a curvature of the spine and cannot hold his neck straight. It had to be treated in childhood too, but his family had no money for proper treatment even then. The boy is growing up, and his back problems grow along with him. He suffers severe pains.

And this beauty with huge brown eyes is Princess Jasmine, or rather, 10-year-old Tika. She recently developed epileptic seizures. The family did not eat for a week to take her to the doctor. The doctors said that it would not be possible to make a diagnosis right away, it was necessary to examine and monitor her. Thee just mocked on them. The family will not manage to withstand more weeks of starvation. They did not prescribe her drug treatment. And the little beauty Tika lives in fear, that this horror will repeat again, that she will suddenly feel bad in the street, that she will suddenly collapse at school... "Probably, they will laugh at me, or they will not want to communicate with me at all, thinking that I am contagious."

The only healthy person in the family is 11-year-old Temuri. Nothing hurts him. He may not even eat for several days. He is strong, he is an older brother! But his soul hurts. He realizes better than others that his family needs to be saved! In the meantime, he does not succeed - according to the documents, he is too young!

Nunu: Right now, I'm expecting my sixth child. I found out about pregnancy late, I visited doctor only twice. I hope that the baby won't have any health problems. It won’t be easy for us to keep even a healthy baby. I pray to the Lord that at least I could breastfeed her.

Nunu: Yes, we even came up with a name for her. All children have names starting with the letter "T": Temuri, Tika, Tornike, Tamara and Tengo. And now Teona or Tamta will be born. My pregnancy was hard, and I am so scared. Being pregnant both with Tamara and Tengo I felt bad. Tengo was born with his intestines out...

“Soon we will have a little sister! The real one, and she will cry! "

- Really?

Nunu: Well, maybe I am not expressing myself correctly, but his belly had such thin skin that his tummy hung down, and one could see his intestines. It was terrible. God forbid.

"If I become a pastry chef, I will bake you a huge cake, like our table."

- Nunu, what do you need to feel calm?

Nunu: First of all, I need to take all of my children to a good doctor in Tbilisi to complete their medical examination, to take all necessary tests and examinations. Even our annual allowance will not be enough for that! I can do nothing. And my husband is sick, he has asthma. He can't work. He used to work hard and ruined his health. And the only thing we have now is an allowance.

- Is there no one to help you?

Nunu: No. My mother died. My father is old, he needs help himself. My husband has a tense relationship with his mother. We do not need anything from her. We sleep on the floor. There is one bed for the little ones. The only thing I want is to take my children to the doctor. I don’t need anything else. Only health!

Tika (10-year-old): Ma’am, could I ask you for a speckled dress? If we have to go to the doctor in the city, I will have nothing to wear. I do not want anyone to call me a ragamuffin.

- Sure. What else are you dreaming about?

Tika: Sometimes I imagine that I will fall asleep and then wake up as a princess! And I have a big closet with beautiful dresses! And mom and sister have it too. We all are beautifully dressed. Wearing beautiful shoes. And we cook a lot of cakes and pastries. It is so cool!

- What are your plans for the future? What would you like to become?

Tika: A dressmaker, pastry chef and singer!

- Oh, how interesting. Why did you choose such different professions? 

Tika: Well look. If I become a dressmaker, I can sew dresses for myself and my mother. The most beautiful dresses in the world! And if I become a pastry chef, we will always have a birthday cake! It’s pretty smart idea, isn’t it? And could I please have a bed? Sleeping on the floor is so uncomfortable.

You can't even dream of being a princess sleeping on a bed like this.

Unfortunately, we did not manage to talk to other children, they turned out to be very shy. They couldn't even say what they were dreaming about. 

Fear... This is what fills the life of a mother of young children. Fear for their health. Fear for their uncertain future. Where to get money? What to do? There is only one hope left - to ask people and hope for their help. To ask those who do not condemn and snort behind their backs, that they should not give birth if they were unable to keep their children. This is definitely not our business. These are God's children. Someone has no children, someone has many of them, but we are just obliged to act according to our conscience. Do not give our child an extra candy but give someone else a piece of bread.
