The Most Beneficial Fruit for Eye Health Named

According to Australian researchers, it’s the orange

People who eat at least one orange a day are less likely to experience vision problems than those who avoid this fruit. This conclusion was made by specialists from the University of Sydney, Australia.

After studying the diet and vision health of Sydney residents for 15 years, the researchers found that daily consumption of oranges reduced the risk of retinal degeneration by approximately 60%. Experts suggest that the benefits of oranges and citrus fruits for vision can be partly explained by their high flavonoid content. These organic compounds offer numerous health benefits, including protecting the retina. The researchers also noted that citrus peels contain even more flavonoids than the fruit’s flesh. Citrus zest is often used in cooking, for example, to add aroma to desserts and sauces.

However, scientists emphasize that the benefits of oranges are not solely due to flavonoids. Other flavonoid-rich foods—such as green tea, wine, and apples—had only about half the protective effect on the retina.
