Which Sleeping Position Is Best?

Most people find sleeping on their left side more comfortable. Studies have shown that this position promotes better digestion, reduces acid reflux, and improves blood circulation to vital organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys.

Sleeping on the left side also benefits the lymphatic system, which drains into the thoracic duct located on the left side of the body. This means that essential nutrients enter the lymphatic system more efficiently.  Additionally, the spleen functions more effectively due to increased blood flow.

Side sleeping is generally recommended for children, pregnant women, and the elderly.  However, the choice of side depends on individual comfort levels. Expectant mothers, in particular, benefit from sleeping on their left side, as it enhances blood circulation to the fetus.

That said, some people find sleeping on the right side more comfortable. This position may help reduce acid reflux and heartburn. However, there are important considerations: consistently sleeping on the right side may put pressure on the liver, causing discomfort and potentially affecting its function.  It may also have a negative impact on the autonomic nervous system.
