0901200270Lord, forgive us, sinners, for sometimes failing to appreciate what we already have, and for always wanting more… Forgive us, Father! What an incredible blessing it is that You led us to one of the most unfortunate women in the world – and even gave us the strength and means to help her!
REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS FIND THE WAY TO GOD!
Manana (65-year-old): “Until I was eleven, I crawled on the ground, scraping my hands and knees raw. They laughed at me, called me stupid and uneducated – because I never went to school. I don’t even know how I survived it all. In my old age, a bad surgery took away my ability to walk. I asked the local authorities for a powered wheelchair, but they refused, saying those are only given to people who can’t use their arms. I’ve been left completely alone, kind people… I’m starving, and I have no one to help me…”
When the Fund’s journalist arrived at her door, Grandma Manana broke down in tears. She cries day and night – from pain, from helplessness, from the injustice of doctors who robbed her of her health and her ability to walk. Friends, this tragedy affects us all! Because what happened to her… could happen to anyone.
Manana: “After a botched hip surgery, I can no longer walk. At home, I move around by pushing myself on a low stool, dragging my legs behind me. I often fall – and then lie on the floor for hours, because there’s no one to help me up. I live alone. People tell me to go to a nursing home – but I don’t want that.”
Manana: “There was a time I could walk with crutches. But now I can’t take a single step. How can the surgeon who did this to me sleep at night? For some doctors, the Hippocratic Oath means nothing anymore.”
Manana: “I was born with a dislocated hip. The midwife simply pulled me out of my mother by the legs…”
— Does anyone help you?
Manana: I have five siblings, but they all moved away with their own families. I stayed behind, in our parents’ house. (She cries.) My pension isn’t enough for food or medicine – I often go hungry. The neighbors don’t visit me. They don’t even care if I’m alive. No one cares about a poor, sick old woman. When you came today, my dear, I was so happy. It means someone still cares. I want to believe that’s true!
– Have you ever been married?
Manana: No, unfortunately. I never had a family of my own. I never experienced the joy of motherhood. When I was younger, a good man wanted to marry me, but I turned him down. I regret it now. There’s nothing worse than loneliness.” (She cries.)
Manana: “My back is hunched, scoliosis has twisted me. My spine is so curved that I struggle to breathe.”
Manana: “I am completely helpless. I can’t even cook for myself. I don’t have a fridge – so food spoils quickly. I don’t have a washing machine. I use a chamber pot instead of a toilet, and wet wipes instead of a shower. Is this what life is supposed to be? My dream is to take a proper bath, just once. But will it ever come true?”
Manana: “I asked the local authorities for an electric wheelchair, but they said no. They told me only people with disabled arms are eligible. But how are they supposed to control the wheelchair? I didn’t understand. I got angry and bought one on credit. Now half of my pension goes to the bank to repay the loan.”
Manana: “I live in a house that was once damaged by fire. And I still don’t have the money to repair it.”
Manana: “Until now, I’ve never asked anyone for anything. But please – help me. I need food. And if you could help me get a refrigerator, a washing machine, and a bed with an orthopedic mattress, it would make my life so much easier. May every kind deed you do for me come back to you a hundredfold. May the Lord be merciful to you, and to me. Amen.”
