For Keti, Mate, Anastasia and 2-year-old Mariam, their dearest mother is their grandmother. Grandma is the most beloved person in the whole universe. “I would give my life so that the children were raised by their mother. Children need mother’s warmth. But what to do - they are afraid even to remember her, they follow me like chicks, when one of them hugs me, the rest run up to me too. Baby Mariam is in my arms all the time. The worst thing is - when a person is alive, but he does not exist anymore,” the grandmother of the children - Ketino – says, holding back her tears.

Ketino: I don’t know what to say and where to start with. Their mother had health problems, she sometimes became aggressive, she could even hit the child. When her condition became severe, we decided it would be better if she stops communicating with children. She was put to hospital for a while, and now lives with her parents.

Mariam is the youngest and thinks that her grandmother is only “hers” but we also want to cuddle her

Ketino: No. Children are afraid of her. They don't even recall her. It hurts me twice as much. How can children be afraid of their mother? But she hurt them. I can't talk about everything right now. I hope they will grow up, and her health will improve, and the children will forget the horrors that they had to endure from her.

Ketino: My son and I are raising children together.

Mate: And I love it when my dad and I go to the forest together for firewood. I love helping him with everything. I love it more than learning! I also help him in the vineyard - sometimes neighbors call him to help. He helps his neighbors and I help him! That's how good I am! And I'm chief in charge of firewood! It is necessary to bring firewood, so that the stove does not go out. If this happens the children will cry and freeze.

Keti: I am a good girl too. I help my grandmother to cook! I do best with cabbage salad and cookies. Kids love cookies too. It is a pity that we not always can bake it. We not always have butter and sugar.

Anastasia: I am a good girl because I don’t cry and I'm best at hugging my granny. And I'm a good girl because I love her the most! Grandma loves doing laundry the most. She does laundry every day. And she does not let me splash in cold water!

Ketino: Anastasia named my biggest problem. It is true that I do laundry most of the time. Children can’t wear dirty clothes, can they? It is enough that they wear someone else's hand-me-downs – but I will not let anyone to say about them that they are dirty. So, I must splash around in basins every day. It is okay in the summer, but in the winter, it turns into a living hell. 

Ketino: We don't have a TV. And now the children need it so much. Sometimes I don't know how to entertain them, how to cheer them up. They got a big trauma, even though they try not to show me. We don't have a gas stove, we don't have a water heater. Our biggest problem is that we don’t have a bathroom at home. You need to go to the toilet and wash your hands in the yard. Bathing is another problem. I put basins near the stove and so I bathe them. If there is any chance - I have no idea how - to arrange that, it would be a salvation for me and for the children.

Ketino: We get an allowance - 960 GEL for 6 people. Sometimes my son gets part-time job. He does not have a permanent job. I buy the most necessary groceries for the future - flour, potatoes, pasta, butter, sugar. Sometimes it's not enough. But I cannot say that the children are starving - I can always bake bread for them. But we have long forgotten about meat and dairy products. I can’t buy clothes - they wear someone else’s hand-me-downs. And I can't buy school supplies.

Keti: I really like drawing, but there are no pencils left at home. I can only draw at school if someone lends me them. I love drawing so much!

Keti: I already told you what I like to cook. I even want to be a chef. 

Keti: Oh! Do you know how many of them I have? Right now, I really want to have a Christmas tree. Children have never seen it! I would draw, but I don't even have pencils. We would decorate it - oh how fun it would be! I would teach them to recited poetry, and we would arrange a New Year's concert for granny. She's sad all the time.

“Do all children get gifts for the New Year?”

Anastasia: And I'll sing! And I'll dance. Will there be gifts under the Christmas tree? 

Anastasia: I would like to have blocks and one doll for me and another doll for Mariam.  She is still a baby, she will not be able to play by herself, and so that the doll does not get bored, I will play with it myself! And there will be two dolls. I'll call one Mari and the other Taso. Marie will be my doll and Taso will be Mariam’s one! Look, what a good plan I came up with!

Mate: Mate wants a bike and a tablet and become a policeman. 

Keti: I also want a tablet. And colored pencils, and felt-tip pens, and paints ... 

Mate: I want pencils too! So that there was no need to quarrel with Keti! 

Mate: yeah! We are good at it! 

Ketino: they are obedient children. They' try not to upset me. They study well, Anastasia is the naughtiest of them. 

"Really? Are we really going to have a New Year?”

Ketino: It was the first time now that I heard they wanted a Christmas tree. They never tell me about their dreams. They know that I do my best to make them happy. What can I wish for myself? The only thing is a washing machine, so that there was more time left for the children. Raising children is a big responsibility and raising grandchildren is million times bigger responsibility! You need a hundredfold attention, love, warmth. So that they never feel left out. We also need closets or a chest of drawers. There is no room to store clothes. During one of the attacks of aggression, their mother broke all the cabinets with an ax. God was merciful that not a single child was in the room at that time.

 Their grandmother is the whole world for them. But she cannot give the children everything they need. And these destitute angels need a lot facing the new year and Christmas. Please, for one minute take a break from the festive bustle, from everyday chaos and make sure that you not only will meet the New Year with your family at your cozy warm home having fun at a fest dinner full of delicious food but also with a clear conscience. We cnnot believe that a holiday can be perfect when children suffer nearby without a mother, without goodies and without a Christmas tree!
