- Lika, what kind of sister did you want to have?
Lika (7-year-old): I wanted Nino - I even came up with a name for her. But I wanted her to talk to me and walk with me. And she only cries, screams, and bites me.
- Is she always like this?
Lika: Sometimes she calms down. Then I immediately run up to her and start playing with her, I give her the doll, but she cannot hold it. Then she gets angry and starts biting me. Do you know how much it hurts? Her teeth are like the ones of neighbor's dog! And she bites stronger! I'm so afraid. It sometimes bleeds.
- Did she bite you?
Lika: More often she bites herself and mom. I must be tasteless.
– Keti, is Lika saying the truth? Or is it her childhood fantasy?
Keti: Oh, unfortunately, these aren't her fantasies! Nino is really in a very serious condition. She has cerebral palsy since birth. She can't do anything on her own. She yells all the time and bites her hands. I don't know how to deal with it. I'm not going to tie my daughter. Here, you can hear her screaming. Medications calm her down, but not always. There are days when she does not stop for a second. It is so hard.
- It must be so difficult for you? You are very young - you are a child yourself!
Keti: Yes, I am 23. I got married early, I was 15 years then. I thought having kids was as easy as playing with dolls. Nothing of the kind! When Nino was born, I just did not know what to do. God bless my mom! She supported me and she still helps me with the girls.
- Keti, how did you decide to take such a serious step at such a young age? Didn't you want to study, work?
Keti: To be honest, I did not like to study, I stayed at home all the time. Studying was not easy for me. To tell you the truth, I couldn't read or add at all. I met Roland by phone. We talked like that for one year, we didn't see each other. And then we decided to meet. He told me he wanted to take care of me, and I melted with that. Soon I agreed to marry him, and we have been together for eight years now. Roland is a wonderful father, and the children simply adore him. You should have seen how he takes care of Nino. He copes better than me!
- Keti, your house is in a terrible condition! How do you live here?
Keti: It’s my parent’s house. It’s really falling apart. But what to do? We can’t live in the street.
Lika: It is a terrible house! I am afraid of it sometimes. We have the ugliest house in the village. Mice and even rats get here.
– But I would say that the most beautiful girl lives in this house! Do you agree with me?
Lika: Yes! I agree with you! Thank you! I put on this dress especially for you, it is the most beautiful I have! But my mom does not let me go to school with it. But I will grow up and buy a lot of these “dresses”!
- What do you want to become?
Lika: I want to become a doctor, for sure! I will become a doctor, will cure my sister and then I’ll play with her normally. Because now she can’t even hold a doll in her hands. I don’t like to learn. For that you need to be able to read, right?
- Everyone must learn, for sure! I am sure, you’ll be good in that.
Lika: Well, talk to my mom again, and I'll solve the math for now.
– Keti, what do you live on?
Keti: We all are unemployed, unfortunately. My parents get pension, Nino gets pension, and we also get allowance. My husband can’t work, his stomach aches all the time. He refuses to buy medications for himself, he says that everything is for Nino. Our money is spent only on diapers, medications, and food. We do not even think about buying something extra (well, if one can call extra, things like clothes or shoes). You know how hard it is to wash Nino’s linen every day, with hands? I can’t bear that anymore.
- What would make your life easier?
Keti: First of all, diapers, medications, and cereals for Nino. She needs all that as air. It’s hard to feed her with an ordinary food. We eat soups and Nino can inadvertently wave her hand and pour hot food on herself! One more thing - if there will be any chance, please, help me with a washing machine. And I don’t know what to say about the rest. Probably, clothes for Lika.
Lika: Let me say for myself! I really want a real doll that “pees” and cries just like my sister! I just dream about such doll! I also want a toy kitchen and cookware. Because our kitchen and cookware are very ugly!
- Do you want anything for school and learning?
Lika: Let me first play with toys and then I will think about school, okay? Well, and if you know of any medication to stop Nino from biting, then bring it too! I really dream about playing like that. And also, bring me salami and sausages.
