"I can't live without her! Please do something!" – With tears in her eyes pleaded Lena…
Lena is pleading about her mother, a cancer patient.
From the first day of her illness and for already 2 years she has been taking touching and tender care of her mother. All people would like to have such daughters...! Oh, what grief! After all, they are alone, alone in the whole world…
Mother Svetlana is 49 years old, and Lena is 19. They live in an tiny apartment in the outskirts of Tbilisi.
– Cancer… This word from the mouth of the doctor sounded like a sentence... – Quietly begins the story the mother, suffering from terrible pain.
– As I heard it, it went dark in my eyes, after a second I fell on a chair, looked into the tearful eyes of my daughter, and burst into tears myself. It was a roar... A loud, monstrous roar!  I didn't know what to do, where to go, what for, and why. Why did this happen to me?... Why now, when I don't have anything? Why now, when my daughter needs to finish school, go to the University...? There were so many questions in my head, so many bad thoughts... It felt like I was thrown down from a tower! Inside, everything snapped.... Since then, I have lived with this feeling. – Svetlana's story was interrupted by a strong chest cough.
The daughter, who was sitting next to her, immediately jumped up, ran to the kitchen and brought a napkin, and then gently wiped the blood from the mother's nose. There was no limit to my fright. I looked at them in confusion, not knowing what to do with my awkwardness…
– If it's difficult for you, we don't have to continue. It will be enough to have a dialogue with Elena…
– No, dear... Sorry for the blood, but when I heard about your visit, I decided that I would force myself to talk to you, no matter how difficult it could be. My Lena has done a lot for me, I want to help her at least in this… We don't have anything right now, not even anything to treat you… It is impossible to describe in words how hard it is for us right now... – Svetlana said guiltily.
– What are you talking about, we're here to help you. If you want to talk, go on with your story…
- Two years ago, I felt terrible abdominal pain. I went to the doctor, he said it was gastritis. The pain continued for a long time. We have always had a difficult financial situation, we have always lived in rented apartments, and we have nothing of our own. I didn't do anything until I got really sick. I blame myself for it now... Oh, how much I blame myself!... I felt that something terrible was happening! You know, I felt it! And I was scared.
There was no money for a second trip to the doctor. Then I still had a husband who worked. In three months, we managed to collect the necessary amount for MRI and additional tests… I had no insurance then, and I had to pay for a lot of things out of my own pocket. And when I found out that I had a malignant tumor in my rectum, which blocked the entire anus and homeostasis in the liver, I understood why I was always living in fear. The tumor had to be urgently cut out, I did not know what to do, because all the money was spent on confirming this terrible diagnosis.
– How much money are we talking about? How much did the operation cost?
– It was necessary to collect 9 000 lari. 9 000! And we had less than nothing! My daughter started asking for help from the state, collecting documents, and making all the formalities for my pension. Thanks to it, the state funded us by 80%. Another problem arose: it was necessary to collect about 2,000 lari. Our relatives helped us.  They sent some money from Russia, the neighbors also added, my husband helped and I was operated.
– Did it help?
– Oh… I wish it would… You should have known, my dear, what hopes I had… At first, yes, it was easier for me… But after the operation, I needed chemotherapy. My doctor prescribed 10 courses. Then all hell broke loose. 7 chemistries have been done, and 3 were left. I held on, honestly, I held on well, but the last session... my God… It was so painful... After it, I have hellish pain, dizziness, my whole body aches. I cry out in pain at night, I can't describe it... I feel like it's eating me up inside. I lose any hope every time there are attacks of pain. Once I wanted to run out of the window shouting "Help!", but my daughter stopped me. This was the day when I had my 7th treatment, for which we withdrew money for social assistance for a year in advance. It was an attack of pain and despair, because we were in my worst nightmare…
– So, the state paid you some kind of allowance, right?
– We receive a pension and a social allowance in the amount of 140 lari. But to say that this is not enough is to say nothing. Only my rehabilitation medications cost about 100 lari. I also have diabetes. Every day I need a insulin injection, sometimes two, and sometimes three... Do you know how much it costs? More than 100 lari per ampoule! – Svetlana began to shake from emotions... – Can you imagine?! Insulin, which is vital to me, costs as much as our entire monthly income!
– What do you eat, and where do you get funds for other medicines?
– My daughter worked until I was assigned bed regime. Now relatives help us with food. I have 1 sister and 2 brothers. But all of them has a hard fate. My sister has 4 children, one of them is disabled… I cried so much when she took the child's pension for a year in advance and brought me 1000 lari for the operation, I didn't take it, but she begged, we agreed that I would take a little and then, with tears and tantrums, I went for it... Then I blamed myself so much... Oh… And the apartment where we are now belongs to my older brother, who is still in Germany treating his son, who also has cancer... But they have already given up, they are tired of fighting… And I understand them! Soon they will arrive and will have to move... But where? I don't know… There is also a younger brother, who served in Afghanistan. Now he lives here, not far away, his child was born blind, and also requires special care. There are four of us in the family and it is difficult for everyone. I used to help my siblings, but now you can see for yourself what the situation is…
– How did you live before that? – You said you had a husband. Why did you use the past tense?
Tears flowed from Svetlana's eyes…
"Oh... honey... It's really hard for me to talk about this. I had 2 marriages: the first was with Lena's father, he played and we had to separate; it is impossible to live with a player. Especially when you have nothing, you wander around in rented apartments... Constant moving, poverty, and he plays… It's impossible to put up with this for long. I tried, really! 10 years have passed like a lifetime! In the end, I could not stand it, he lost the next amount that we saved for the apartment, I packed my things that night and left him. The second marriage was for love, but... – Svetlana began to cry, no longer holding back the pain that had accumulated over the years. She just burst out crying! – He's gone mad on nervous grounds... – She said this on an exhalation, and continued to cry…
– If it's difficult for you, we don't have to continue. You can't worry, please, don't force yourself…
– No, you must know why I am in this position. – He held on for a long time, helping, supporting… And then... one day, he lost his mind and robbed a store. Now he is in a mental hospital with a severe form of schizophrenia. It is not treated… We filed for divorce shortly before, but I still have feelings for this man! My daughter will scold me… She says I need to think about myself now, and I can't! I'm so worried about him, I want to help him in some way, support him… But I'm bedridden and in pain every day. How can I help him? – Svetlana, not holding back her emotions, covered her eyes with her hand and began to cry again. She cried of pain, despair, sadness, and injustice. She needed a napkin again. And again there were drops of blood on it…
– Let's change the subject and talk about your daughter. What kind of person is she? Describe her.
– She is the best! – Finally they both smiled. – She can do things that not every adult would be able to do…  She has learned how to inject insulin, helps me move around, changes the pouch (ostomy bag), feeds me, and monitors my blood sugar… She is my gift from heaven! My dear, I haven't given up just because of my Lena! I have the fourth stage cancer. This is the last stage. But I believe that chemotherapy will help me! I believe I can endure it. I am still alive, which means that God has not left us! I will bear this pain, for my daughter's sake! She's trying so hard for me, I can't give up! Yes, it is difficult for us… But my daughter found your Fund and addressed you, which means that there is hope... – Svetlana took the hand of her daughter sitting next to her, whose lower lip was shaking. Tears… I made them cry again, I thought, but no! Elena held them back, swallowed the lump in her throat, and said:
– Yes, we have applied to many funds. One Fund provided one-time assistance in the amount of 100 lari, and we spent this money only for insulin. The rest did not reply to my emails. Thank you for agreeing to help us…
– You're a good girl! It is very rare when at such a young age, a person has such power as you have, Lena!
– What power are you talking about… I had no other choice…Something had to be done! I used to work before my mother's operation. She could walk then, but now... I can't leave her without fear even for a minute. Don't think I'm complaining! My mother raised me for 17 years… Now it's my turn. I will do everything in my power and beyond it! If only she was near, if only she lived... – once again Elena held back hertears, and I was surprised: how, at 19 years old, a fragile girl can have such a will?
– Where do you find so much moral strength, Lena?
- Look at her... - Lena turned her head in the direction of her mother, and looked at her with all her warmth and love... – Mom charges me. Just look at how she tries to live… She is my meaning, my strength, my energy, my life, my everything! I will not give her away to this disease or to anyone else!
 – Are you studying somewhere?
 – Not now, a year ago, when my mother needed help, I left my studies… I studied to be an office manager. I know computer programs well. I worked as by my vocation and as a salesperson, because mom needed expensive rehabilitation drugs. I have many certificates on programming and Photoshop, and recommendations from my previous places of work. I would love to continue, but I can't leave my mother. I just can't. That's why I wrote to you…
– Really? Can you show us any of your achievements?
– Of course!
– Do you have any plans for the future?
– It is a hard question… I hope that my mother will soon overcome cancer, and I will definitely continue to study and work… Maybe even fall in love with someone, get married... I want my mother to see her grandchildren… I will definitely earn money for my own house! We'll move there with my mother! I won't let her worry about not having a roof over her head anymore! I will find my place in life, and my mother will be near me! Do you hear, mummy?! You will be there to share all these moments with me! – Lena told her mother.
– Surely she will… And what is the most difficult thing for you now, in caring for your mother?
– When she is in pain... – Lena stopped, but sad eyes treacherously betrayed all her suffering. – When mommy is in pain, and I stand near her and can't do anything... Look how she suffers, and... I can't help her… She looked at her tearful mother and started wiping the tears away with her hands.
– Tell us about your faith in God, do you often turn to him?
– Every day. When mummy is ill I light a candle and pray… She also prays... We always have Holy Water in our house. God is with us. And He won't leave us! I believe it! It does not leave those who need Him.
– What do you need most of all now? How can we help you?
– First of all, my mother needs chemotherapy. The state finances 70%, but we have to pay 1700 lari for one treatment. We still need to make 3 sessions. This is an unaffordable amount for us…We have nothing but clothes. Everything you see in the room is your uncle's stuff: furniture, appliances, everything is his. We need food too… Mommy needs to follow a special diet, which includes fruits, vegetables, and boiled meat. And you know, probably, what prices are now for all this.  Rehabilitation medications are necessary… Very necessary! I managed to get funding for insulin from the state. We exhaled with relief that we don't need to spend money on it now. But the bags that need to be changed 9 times a month cost 6 lari a piece. We often use it more than necessary… It can be torn and the contents leak out… We put a band-aid on it so that it doesn't break, because we can't buy it and change it... we'll be happy to get any help. It will be like a breath of fresh air for us… I swear…
– Do you believe in good?
– Of course. Thanks to the kindness of some people, we do not starve. When the neighbors cook something, they always bring it to us; they know about our difficult situation…
– Would you like to meet the friends of the Fund?
– Yes, yes! May the Lord bless each of you. We are looking forward to meeting you all… Thank you for that your hearts have responded to our plea for help!
The founder of your Fund has already helped us. You know how? With his songs! Are you surprised? I see that you are surprised! His songs raise my mother's mood. We often listen to him.
– What? Songs of Leonid Mikhailovich?
 – Yes, yes! His songs are... soothing... Mother falls asleep only to his "My Beloved". Don't be surprised so, it often happens that music heals the soul.
 – What advice could you give to people who are in a similar situation?
– Which one?… To love. To believe... And never give up. Whatever happens. To hope… Hope must always be with you. To accept. Everything that happens. And to never blame anyone!  This is the easiest way. If something has happened in your life, take it as a challenge and fight! Always!
Friends, Svetlana and Lena are alone with their trouble. Svetlana has the fourth stage colon cancer and needs funds to continue chemotherapy. The state pays 70%, the remaining amount will have to be paid by the 19-year-old girl and a sick, immobile mother.
The girl, at the age of 19, went through real hard labor, and she is still going through it. When we left, she led us to the end of the landing, hugged us, and begged us to save her mother!
"I can't live without her! Please do something!" – With tears in her eyes pleaded Lena…
Friends, do not leave them alone with this disease! Svetlana and Lena need everything… Lena doesn't have a cell phone. The products that relatives bring them are not enough for normal nutrition of Svetlana. There is no money for the medicines. And most importantly: there is no money to pay for the remaining three chemotherapies! Do not remain indifferent, trouble can knock on the door of any person and become an uninvited guest, turning life upside down for anyone…
Call Svetlana and Lena, find out about their needs, cheer them up, and support them; tell them that they are not alone and that nobody will leave them alone in their trouble! It is very important.
