A 9-year-old boy sits on the steps of a dilapidated shack, gazing hopelessly at the village road. This shack could collapse at any moment, and the child could be trapped under the rubble. Every night, the nine-year-old boy falls asleep terrified, unsure if he’ll wake up to see another morning. What could this child have done to deserve 9 years of nothing but fear, cold, hunger, and heartache? Winter is coming soon, and Badri’s heart is filled with sadness because he has no coat or warm shoes.
Badri (9-year-old): “Auntie, last winter, my feet were always wet because I wore summer shoes, and snow kept getting inside. I dream that maybe this time, my wish will come true, and I’ll have warm boots and a coat this winter. I’ve been dreaming of jeans for years. All the boys my age wear jeans and boots, but I only have torn pants and old shoes that someone threw away. How I wish I had black sneakers and a black tracksuit. And I also want a bicycle. Oh, how I longingly watch other children ride their bikes. We’ve never turned on the TV at home because it’s broken. I think it’s been broken since I was born. And I want so much to watch cartoons. On New Year’s Eve, they show good movies on TV – I know this from the neighbor kids. But in my shack, even on New Year’s Eve – it’s only darkness, cold, and hunger.
