Tomorrow morning, little Erekle’s dreams could be buried with him under the ruins of his home. It’s heartbreaking to write these words, but this is the harsh reality. This poor boy dreams of having a pair of jeans and warm boots.

This is 9-year-old Erekle. He is alive today, but no one knows if this little angel will see another morning… God, it’s so hard to write these words, but this is the bitter reality… Erekle, his sister, and his sick little brother, 4-year-old Zuka, live in a crumbling house. If you can even call it a house! A wooden shelter for stray dogs would be sturdier than the walls where these little angels sleep. There’s no roof or floor in the house. The walls are so cracked that even a slight wind makes the whole place shake like there’s an earthquake. The cold seeps in through the doors and windows, turning the children’s beautiful faces blue. Erekle has many dreams, but he doesn’t talk about them because he knows his mother can’t even afford the medicine for his sick younger brother.

It’s just Erekle, his sister Megi, his sick 4-year-old brother Zuka, and their poor single mother.

Erekle helps his sister wash clothes. The little hands of these angels freeze in the icy water.

Do you know what’s most heartbreaking? The things Erekle only dares to dream about are things every child should have. Should a child really have to dream about new jeans and warm shoes? While other children dream of trips to Disneyland or cruises. God, why is the world so unfair? Some kids have everything, while others don’t even have a piece of stale bread.

Erekle (9 years old): “It’s already getting cold in my village. Other kids’ parents bought them warm jackets. But I have to wear the jacket a kind lady gave me three years ago.
But in three years, I’ve grown, and the jacket is too small now. It’s very old and doesn’t keep me warm anymore. I’ve never had jeans. But I like it when boys my age wear jeans. It’s so stylish. All I have are these pants that my great-grandfather probably wore in the last century. The snow will start falling soon. What if I had just one pair of warm shoes? Just one pair, I’m not asking for much.”

Kind-hearted people, the light in Erekle’s sun-like eyes is slowly being overtaken by a shadow.  That shadow is called hopelessness. Let’s come together again so that life’s unfairness can’t dull the noble eyes of this bright, golden-haired boy.
