Bring Christmas to the elderly—share God’s love!

We invite school students, those in other educational institutions, and anyone willing to write New Year cards and collect gifts for lonely grandparents. Give them the miracle of the season!

Compassion is one of the greatest Christian virtues. Love for your neighbor is inseparable from love for God. And during these days, as Christmas approaches, we must remember this!

When you step into their living spaces (it’s hard to call them homes, apartments, or even rooms), you see the same bleak scene: darkness, mold-covered, crumbling walls, faces lined with deep wrinkles, and eyes filled with resignation—and perhaps the shadow of death. Words can hardly describe it.  Some feel repulsion, others fear growing old and being alone. Some are overwhelmed by hopelessness, others are choking with tears. 

They are elderly, and sometimes it’s hard to guess their age. But if you look closely into their faded, timeworn eyes, beyond the sorrow, you can glimpse a life once filled with youth and fascinating stories.

In our youth and success, we often turn a blind eye, confident that our children and grandchildren will care for us. 

We scroll past somber images and harsh truths, unwilling to accept life as it is. But life is what it is. Believe me, it exists in every yard and every building. Perhaps, just beyond your wall, a grandmother cries from despair in the night. Perhaps an old grandfather clenches his fists in grief, unseen. 

Forgive us for the less-than-festive tone of this message, but if we don’t speak up, nothing will change. And knowing about these elderly souls might awaken in us a desire to help—at least at a bright holiday like Christmas. We want them to have something, even something small, during the New Year and Christmas celebrations—a bit of food, sweets, cookies.
