“I’m not afraid to open the wardrobe anymore, there are no mice in there,” says Mariam. “In the old wardrobe, they used to live and squeak annoyingly, and we had to put mouse repellent to get rid of them. But in the new one, see, there are only our beautiful clothes—new jeans, blouses, overalls…” “And I’m not afraid to sleep anymore,” says her sister Anano. “The new bed won’t turn into a horror attraction at night. Its legs don’t break, and it doesn’t collapse.” Poor girls! The Barbakadze family endured a lot of hunger and poverty before turning to the Chernovetskyi Fund for help. Friends, if any of you can give the girls a summer vacation, it would mean the world to them. Mariam and Anano have never had a holiday and are spending this summer in the sweltering city. Maybe it’s possible?! They dream of it so much, even when there’s no food in the house. The farther the dream, the more desired it is.

The feet of the unfortunate and kind-hearted Mariam have never touched the ground… Over the course of 20 years, her spine has curved to such an extent that her chest meets her knees. She has sores on her feet that bleed, it’s hard for her to breathe, every movement is challenging for her, but she is a person who knows how to struggle even in such dire conditions…. Decades have passed, but the curved spine and the wheelchair haven’t become symbols of her life. She herself has become a symbol of unwavering determination, a symbol of willpower that inspires everyone around her to fight for their dreams, even when circumstances seem incredibly challenging.

The Greek mythical hero – Sisyphus – was punished by Zeus for robbing the travelers! Essentially, he was a dangerous criminal, a scoundrel, and a killer! But he was from a family of gods and incredibly strong! However, even he couldn’t have imagined the suffering that our own, without exaggeration, Georgian Sisyphus – Levan Toliashvili – is condemned to for a lifetime by the callous indifference of local officials.

Two years ago, Saba Saralidze’s mom accidentally discovered that her son was losing his sight. While on a bus, she pointed out the station names on the monitor, but Saba couldn’t see them. He thought that seeing blurry outlines of people and objects—like looking through a frosted glass—was normal. Keratoconus is a treacherous disease, gradually taking away vision. Saba’s condition was dire: he had only 5% vision in his right eye and 30% in his left one! Precious time had been wasted—no Georgian clinic was able to help him. The family’s despair grew, and it was at this moment that they turned to the Chernovetskyi Fund. We’re thrilled to share some great news! Thanks to the efforts of the Fund and its friends, Saba underwent surgery on his right eye in Turkey, and now there’s a chance that his vision will be restored! No Georgian clinic could help Saba, but with the support of the Chernovetskyi Fund, he was successfully operated on in Turkey. Over the next year, his vision should improve from 5% to 70%.

Mother Elena: Forgive me for bothering you and asking so much, but isn’t this a shared cause of ours. I won’t hide it—I’m relying on you again… (Smiles) We’re always in need of medications, diapers, wet wipes, and cleaning supplies for the bath and toilet. To care for our three bedridden residents, I use a special cleansing foam. Maybe someone would like to donate a piano to the shelter? It doesn’t have to be new, just in good working condition. Our grandmothers need more joy—this would truly entertain them. And who knows, maybe someone would even give a little concert, like the students from the Georgian-German School “Skhivi.” Oh, what a wonderful day that was! I’ve also been thinking of enclosing the area where our residents sit during the day, to shield them from rain and wind. Metal-plastic would be best. I’m seeking help with this as well. The “Lazaret” shelter regularly needs medications, diapers, hygiene items, and cleaning supplies. Visiting the grandmothers in person is a lovely idea! This day will bring them so much joy and become a lasting memory!
