“School is starting soon, and I have nothing but these torn shoes,” says 12-year-old Lizi, abandoned by her father, dreaming of new clothes for school.

This is 12-year-old Lizi. Even before she was born, her heartless father had already rejected her. Throughout her childhood, Lizi would sit by the window, waiting for her father to come back. She couldn’t believe that he had truly left her. But now, Lizi knows for sure that her father, who lives just a few blocks away, simply doesn’t care whether his daughter goes to school in torn shoes or not. Yes, you heard right—this child has been going to school, even in the cold winter months, wearing these same torn shoes.

And no, these shoes aren’t trash –  they are Lizi’s only pair.

Lizi (12-year-old): School is starting soon, and all I have are these torn shoes. I don’t even have a school bag. I have absolutely nothing for school, and it breaks my heart. Every year, I dream of going to school in new clothes, even just once, but my dream stays a dream. When I see other kids at school in nice clothes, it hurts. Don’t think I’m jealous—I just want the same thing. But I wear patched-up pants. I love jeans, T-shirts, and sneakers. But that’s just a dream… an unfulfilled dream… We don’t even have a TV at home, so I can’t watch anything to take my mind off things. My biggest dream is to have a phone because there’s a group chat for school, and everyone is in it except me. I’m also interested in photography, and if I had a phone, I would take pictures of the beautiful nature around me.

I am so embarrassed.

– Why are you embarrassed, Lizi?

Lizi: I’m embarrassed because I’m a child who has nothing, absolutely nothing, and even my father abandoned me.

– Lizi, the only one who should be embarrassed – is your father.
