This is Irakli from Lagodekhi, and today he’s turning 8. Irakli has 10 siblings, and his large family lives in poverty. When we asked him what he’d like for his birthday, the first thing he asked for was shoes. The child walks barefoot and can’t even leave his home.  Can you imagine? In all of Irakli’s life, he’s never had a single toy!  The children in this family play traditional games like tag and hide-and-seek, and they’ve never seen phones or tablets. 

Irakli (8-year-old): “I’d like to get a smart, nice gift for my birthday.” 

– And what do you mean by a ‘smart gift’? 

– A phone. But not a toy one, a real one. 

– Why do you need a phone?

Irakli, 8 years old: Every family needs a phone. To make an urgent call, record a video, or check the school chat to see what the homework is. All my classmates have phones, but I don’t.  It makes me really sad and upset. But a phone is an expensive gift, and I can’t ask my parents for one. They don’t have money for that. It’s better to buy firewood for winter so we don’t freeze.  So, a phone is just a dream!
