This little angel will celebrate his 4th birthday on November 4. Every child eagerly looks forward to their birthday—to blow out the candles on a cake and sit around a birthday party table with friends. It’s every child’s dream. Zuka has been dreaming all year, waiting for his birthday. And his “golden” birthday is coming soon. But instead of joy, Zuka feels only sadness. He already knows that on this magical day, there will be no birthday party table, no candles to blow out on a cake, and no gifts. Yet he’s spent a whole year dreaming about this.
Zuka (3 years old): I’ll spend my birthday alone in this terrible room. No parents would ever let their kids come here, you know why? Because this house could collapse at any moment, and my brother, sister, and I would be trapped under the ruins. Moms won’t let their kids come here to wish me a happy birthday. But maybe it’s better that no kids come to my birthday…
– Why do you say that, Zuka?
Zuka: If they come, I won’t even have a birthday cake, and they’ll probably laugh at me. My mom has never been able to bake me a cake. There should be some nice food on the birthday table, too. I can’t just feed the kids bread and fried potatoes, right? Mom couldn’t even buy me colorful candles so I could blow them out and make wishes, even without a cake.
-Zuka, imagine you’re blowing out candles on a cake. What would you wish for?
Zuka: I want toys: a big remote-controlled car and a bicycle. I’d also wish that when the snow comes, I could make a snowman in the yard, just like other kids do.
— What would stop you from doing that, Zuka?
Zuka: If I don’t have a warm coat, I’ll freeze out there in the snow. The sole on my boots is coming apart, and water gets inside. I don’t have a warm sweater or winter gloves. How can I make a snowman in the snow? When I come inside from the cold, I don’t even have a warm blanket to wrap myself in. I don’t even have a proper bed—I sleep on some metal springs. Other kids sleep in soft beds. How I wish I had a bed like that.
