It’s heartbreaking to look into the sad eyes of a Georgian child while we seem to see only happiness around us. Alas, the heart of this proud country’s future creator is filled with nothing but hopelessness and sorrow. Dear reader, take a look at this poor boy, Jambul, who is about to turn 7. In all these years, not a single ray of joy has brightened his heart. Why? Because life’s cruel hand has condemned Jambul’s family to crushing poverty.
When we asked the boy what gift he wanted for his birthday, he looked at his siblings in disbelief, unable to comprehend that someone might actually give him a present.

– Jambul, what gifts have you received on your birthdays?

Jambul: I’ve never received anything for my birthday—not a single gift. I’ve never even had a piece of candy, not on my birthday nor on my siblings’ birthdays (he said, bowing his head sadly).

– And what do you dream of, Jambul? What would you like kind people to give you for your birthday?

Jambul: I dream of a remote-controlled car.

– What kind of remote-controlled car would you like?

Jambul: A small one!

Dear reader, he’s just a little boy, too young to overcome childish desires, but his Georgian soul and instincts tell him not to ask too much of others. Very few children would say they want something “small.” Most kids dream of big, shiny, and powerful things. But this little boy from a poor family is so modest he doesn’t even dare to ask for much.

Jambul: This chair becomes my bed at night. My brother and I sleep here with the little ones. In the morning, my body aches, but we have no choice but to get used to it.

– Jambul, don’t you have a regular bed?

Jambul: We don’t have money for anything. Sometimes we don’t even have food at home, so how could we afford a bed?

– Do you want to have a new bed?

Jambul: Oh, uncle, I don’t even dream about having a bed. Today, we ate just one piece of bread each. Who would bring us a bed? We’re forgotten by everyone. Father always tells us that God will not abandon us.

Jambul: my father brought me this broken car and told me it was a gift from God. It smelled like garbage, but I was so, so happy. My dream is to race with other kids in cars.
