To do this, special neurons were restored in rodents
Scientists were able to return the ability to walk to mice with spinal cord injuries. The study was published by neurobiologists from Harvard, the University of California Los Angeles and the Swiss Higher Technical School Zurich.
Back in 2018, scientists found a way to repair axons – nerve fibers that transmit electrical signals throughout the body. The researchers were able to create a special biomaterial that was tested on mice. However, the scientists were not able to restore the performance of some motor functions.
Then neurobiologists simply created in the body of mice an environment in which axons could recover. However, this did not give serious success in restoring motor functions. This time, scientists tried to restore axons so that the fibers connect to those areas with which they have lost connection due to injury.
The researchers conducted the experiment on mice with relatively mild injuries, as well as on a rodent with a severe spinal cord injury. In both cases, the animals had major improvements in walking.
