Mariam is about to turn 10. She doesn’t have a single happy memory tied to her own birthday. Mariam has four siblings, and even on their birthdays, she’s never seen so much as a slice of cake at home. Dear friends of the foundation, look at this little girl. Doesn’t the world deserve to see the joy and energy that should shine in her eyes? But unfortunately, a life of hardship has robbed her family of the financial means to give Mariam the happy childhood she deserves. Despite all the challenges, she keeps fighting for her dreams. She is passionate about football and proudly told us she’s an excellent goalkeeper!

– Mariam, have you ever celebrated your birthday?

Mariam (9 years old):  No.

– Have you ever been to someone else’s birthday party?

Mariam (9 years old): I don’t even go to other people’s birthday parties because we don’t have any money. I just say, ‘Happy birthday,’ and go home.

As she said this, her eyes filled with tears, remembering all the awkward moments when she had to make excuses during classmates’ celebrations so she wouldn’t have to ask her mother for even a tiny bit of money.

– Mariam, what would you like as a gift for your birthday?

Mariam (9 years old):  I want Mamardashvili’s uniform and gloves.

This little girl’s dream is a tribute to her favorite goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili. She told us that if she became a famous and successful goalkeeper like him, she would help people in need and those who are suffering.

Georgians, this is the pride of our small nation! Look at this bright future, one that will be built by this generation and by amazing children like Mariam. Love for one another will save our people.
