Five-year-old Ivane recently underwent a serious throat surgery. Now he only plays doctors – the very doctors who saved his life.

Five-year-old Ivane recently had surgery on his throat. Now he often plays doctor. He takes his toy medical instruments, listens to his mother’s heartbeat, brings her water, and asks how she is feeling. 

When I asked Ivane what he dreams about, his little eyes lit up: 

Ivane, 5-year-old: “I have been asking my mommy for a long time to buy me a ball, but she says she doesn’t have enough money. I want a big ball. I will play with the other kids in the yard. They will be happy too!”

Ivane, 5-year-old: “I want a toy gun. I will protect my mommy.”

His mother works as a cleaner in a hospital. Every day she washes floors and cleans hospital rooms. But even so, there is often not enough money for even the most basic food.

Perhaps that is why Ivane’s wishes are not only about toys.

Ivane, 5-year-old: “I want candies, apples, and bananas. And I want there to always be bread at home.”

Sitting in front of me was an ordinary little boy with kind eyes. He wasn’t asking for anything impossible. 

A big ball. A few sweets. Some fruit. The chance to protect his beloved mother with a toy gun. And bread that will always be waiting for him at home.

Perhaps this is what childhood looks like – the childhood that little Ivane dreams of.
