What do the children of a large Georgian family with 11 children dream about most? These are our children, friends. They have no one else to turn to for help.

Nine-year-old Luka has just one pair of shoes.

Luka, 9 years old: “These are the only shoes I have.  I don’t have another pair.  When it rains, my sneakers get soaked, and I have nothing to change into.”

We asked Luka what he dreams about. Usually, children answer that question by talking about a bicycle, a football, or a building set. But not Luka. 

Luka, 9 years old: “I really need a phone so I can stay in touch with my parents when I’m away from home. And I need it for school, too.”

His older brother, Chichiko, dreams of having a phone of his own as well. But their parents cannot even afford to send their children on school trips. Then Chichiko told us about one of the saddest moments he has experienced. 

Chichiko, 11 years old: “My whole class went on two school trips. I was the only one who did not go because my parents didn’t have the money.”

The bus drove away. The whole class went together. Chichiko was left alone. Not because he didn’t want to go. Simply because there wasn’t enough money at home. 

But he went to a third school trip.

Chichiko, 11 years old: “My classmate’s mother paid for me. I’m so grateful to her. I was happier than I can put into words.”

Sometimes, one act of kindness from a stranger becomes a memory a child carries for the rest of their life.

Today, we have the opportunity to do the same for these children. To make their dreams come true. Not someday. Not later. But now – when it matters most.
