0901200270This is six-year-old Pikria. She was only 4 years old when her father left her to be with another woman. Since then, he hasn’t checked in once to see how his own flesh and blood is doing. Despite this, for the past three years, the little girl hasn’t lost hope and waits at the window every day for her father’s return. Girls love their fathers deeply, which is why only a father can cause them the most heartache. Her little heart is full of both hurt and love for her dad. Can you imagine the emotions these two feelings create in such a young girl?
Pikria was born on a glorious day, the feast of Saint George—November 23. It seems that Saint George became the father to this child, abandoned by her biological father. Pikria’s birthday is approaching. She has never celebrated her birthday because her 5-year-old brother Saba is sick, and their poor mother doesn’t even have the money to take him to the doctor. This smart girl understands why her mother can’t throw her a birthday party or buy her toys. At night, she only dreams to herself, silently, without saying a word. It was once when Pikria dared to share her dreams out loud was when a correspondent from the Fund visited her home. Maybe the poor girl felt a spark of hope, and so she modestly told the unfamiliar woman that she dreams of celebrating her birthday with her friends and family.
Pikria (6 years old): Auntie, we don’t have anything to eat at home except pasta. And if I invite my friends on November 23, I can’t just serve them pasta, right? That’s embarrassing. I dream of having a birthday cake, and I want to blow out the candles like other kids and make a wish.
– What would you wish for? Will you tell me?
Pikria: I want new clothes. I go to school in old, torn clothes. I want jeans, pretty T-shirts, dresses, and warm boots. I don’t even have a warm coat, and I’m always cold. Snow and rainwater get into my shoes. And then I don’t tell anyone when I get a fever, because I don’t want my mom to spend the money she’s saved for my brother’s medicine on me. I dream of having roller skates. But more than anything, I want a bicycle. If I could blow out the candles on my birthday cake and make just one wish, it would be for a phone. When the teachers post assignments in the chat, all the kids read them except for me, because I’m the only one without a phone, and I feel like this dream will never come true.
7-year-old Pikria is bathing in this broken basin. Look at her sad eyes.
This is 7-year-old Pikria from the village of Ortasheni. The child was 4 years old when their father abandoned them. Her younger brother was 2 years old at the time. The boy is still sick, but the single mother has no money for treatment. The wise girl understands that her brother is sick because of poverty, so she does not ask her mother for anything. However, the child’s heart hurts; it hurts a lot… School will start soon, and the girl does not have a single pair of normal shoes or a dress to go to school. On the first day of school, when a solemn ceremony is taking place in the yard, how can the girl come in torn shoes? The poor child finished first grade without even putting on a warm coat and her shoes were constantly soaked with water. The child does not dream of luxury items. A new doll is enough for a child’s happiness. Unfortunately, the girl has never had a new toy.
Pikria (7 years old): “Yesterday, my mother and I went to the market to buy a black skirt and a white shirt for school. We did not have enough money. The seller did not give a discount. I do not have any shoes or boots. I only have torn shoes. I dream of going to school dressed nicely, like other children. I also dream of having a bicycle. I would ride a lot in my village and give rides to poor children like me. I have never had new jeans. However, I like it when girls wear white sneakers and jeans. I would like to dress as nicely as they do, at least for one day.
Most of all, I dream of a phone. Every child at school has one, except me. Do not think that I envy them, but I really want to take pictures against the backdrop of beautiful nature. This is my big dream, but I know that it will never come true. My mother can’t even take my 5-year-old brother Saba to the doctor, so how will she buy me a phone? I have never even asked her. Only in my dreams is there a phone, and I have revealed this dream to you for the first time, Auntie (addressing the fund’s correspondent). I have another dream, but I am ashamed to say it (saying these words, the child bowed her head and sighed sadly). Oh, I bathe in this basin, Auntie, even in winter. I freeze, and then I get sick. We do not have a bathtub. Now this basin is cracked too. Auntie, do other children also bathe in a broken basin?”
Kind people, let us not abandon 7-year-old Pikria, abandoned by her father. The child has already been disappointed once, and we can light stars in the tearful eyes of the poor girl.
