Anano’s birthday is on November 12, and she’ll be turning 6! But instead of a smile, her eyes are filled with tears. Imagine, this little girl has never received a birthday greeting. No neighborhood children will come to her party, just as she has never attended theirs—her parents simply can’t afford to bring a gift. And who would go empty-handed? So, no guests or surprises this year either. Even a cake is out of reach for her mom! And her dream of a doll with braids will remain just that—a dream.
Anano: “I don’t have any toys, but I can live without them. But without warm clothes, I could freeze in the winter. I really need a jacket and boots. Maybe, just maybe, kind people will surprise me with a gift?!”

Anano (5-year-old): I don’t have any clothes except for what I’m wearing right now. Only one set. And I don’t have shoes, either. When it rains, my feet get soaked, so I can’t go outside in bad weather. I wish I had dresses like a princess, and pretty shoes too. But my parents don’t have the money. My dad collects scrap metal from the dump, sells it, and buys us food with that.
– Anano, do you have any toys?
Anano: No.
– What kind of toys do you like?
Anano: I’d like to have a doll. I’d braid her hair and dress her up. You know, no one wants to be friends with me because I’m from a poor family. But a doll could be my friend!
– What do you dream about?
Anano: I dream of a girl’s bike. The neighbors gave me an old one, but it broke right away. But my biggest dream is a computer, so I can watch cartoons. It’s boring to live without cartoons, and we don’t even have a TV at home. I keep hoping maybe my dad will find an old TV at the dump; that would be amazing! But he hasn’t found one.
