Do you know what it feels like to walk in wet sneakers during winter? It’s freezing!

When a reporter from the fund asked Gio about his dream, the boy shyly pointed to his wet shoes. On cold winter days, 12-year-old Gio goes to school wearing summer sneakers. His feet are always wet and freezing, and he constantly gets sick. It’s almost impossible to stay warm in their crumbling house. Instead of glass windows, there’s plastic sheeting.  The family survives on social allowance alone. Gio’s mom can’t afford medicine, warm shoes, or winter clothes for her son. Gio tries not to ask his mom for anything because he knows she won’t be able to buy it. She’s raising four children alone. Their father left the family and provides no support. Gio’s biggest dream is to have a computer. He wants to become a programmer and get a good job so he can lift his family out of poverty.

Gio: “We’re freezing.  My little sister’s hands and feet are always cold, and I feel so sorry for her. We really need warm shoes first and foremost.  Do you know what it feels like to walk in wet sneakers during winter? It’s freezing! By the time I get to school through the snow, my feet are soaking wet because I don’t have winter boots.”
