0901200270Five-year-old Barbare is shivering from the cold. In the middle of winter, she wears nothing but a thin sweater, and on her feet are torn, old slippers. Can you imagine? This little girl even goes outside like that because her parents can’t afford to buy her warm shoes. A freezing child eats plain bread brought from a free canteen. There’s nothing else in the house to eat. It’s heartbreaking. Barbare’s stomach aches from hunger. It’s impossible not to feel pain looking at this little Georgian beauty.
Barbare (5-year-old): “I want warm clothes and shoes like the other kids have. And sneakers with wheels! Auntie, have you seen those? They’re like roller skates. I’ll also need knee and elbow pads because I don’t know how to skate yet. But I promise I’ll learn quickly—I’m fast! And most of all, I dream of having a phone! ”
Barbare’s family lives, you could say, in a garage. There’s no hot water, no heating. They don’t even have enough beds, so the little girl has to sleep on the floor. She dreams of having her very own soft bed with a warm blanket.
Friends, Barbare was so shy about sharing her wishes with the Fund’s reporter that she even burst into tears from nervousness. But through her tears, she told us her dreams, hoping they might come true. Her mom gently comforted her: “Don’t cry, Barbare, sweetheart. There are so many kind people in Georgia. Your wishes will definitely come true!”

Barbare (5-year-old): Look, this is where I used to sleep—on the floor. I didn’t even have my own bed! I was always shivering, and my nose kept running. Touch the floor – it’s freezing cold! But tonight, I won’t have to sleep like that anymore. Not tonight, and never again!
Here’s my new bed! It’s so soft and cozy! Tonight, I’ll curl up like a kitten and fall asleep. Or maybe I’ll sleep on my back with my hands behind my head—I like that too! And I’ll place my soft toys beside me, the ones you gave me – they deserve a good night’s sleep too.
My baby brother, Luka, has already fallen asleep in his beautiful new crib. He’s just a tiny little baby, so he can sleep all day long. See his pink cheeks? So cute, right? But before… oh, poor thing… he used to be blue from the cold…
Now, I have so much food and so many clothes! I’ll eat some marshmallows first, then yogurt, and then I’ll try everything on! Thank you very much! (Barbare proudly says this in English!)
