On my birthday, there won’t be a cake—just stale bread. A toy airplane is my biggest dream, but I’ve come to realize that dreams don’t come true for poor children

Niko (11 years old): “On March 18, I’ll turn 12. On that day, I won’t leave my room. I won’t go outside to play with the other kids, because they’ll ask me: ‘Niko, aren’t you inviting us to your birthday?’  What am I supposed to say? I can’t tell them that all we have at home is bread and fried pasta. I’m too ashamed to say that out loud. Every child looks forward to their birthday. But I’m the kind of child who just wants March 17 to skip straight to March 19.” That’s what this poor boy told the Fund’s correspondent, lowering his head so that the ‘stranger lady’ wouldn’t see the tears welling up in his eyes.

-Niko, how do you imagine a birthday feast?

Niko: “Meat dishes, fish dishes, khachapuri… and most importantly, a cake with colorful candles.
 I’d blow them out and make a wish. Every birthday, I dream of a miracle—that in the morning, by my bed, there will be a remote-controlled airplane waiting for me. But I’ve already realized that miracles don’t happen. All I can do is dream about toys in my imagination…”

Dear friends of the Fund, if Nikoloz doesn’t receive his dream toy and a birthday cake on March 18, he will lose faith and hope for the future. And that is the worst thing that can happen to a child at this age. Let’s not allow the ‘stars’ in this boy’s shining eyes to fade away.
