Anna (7-year-old): Maybe I’ll be sad and upset on April 20th. I’m not sure yet. On April 20th – my birthday – tears just come on their own, and everything feels unfair. It feels unfair to eat just potatoes fried in oil… to sit on an old, torn, dirty couch… To wear a worn dress… and to look at my poor, broken toys. Maybe I’ll hug my broken teddy bear, Bobi, and my earless Zuzu… and cry with them.
I know that when it’s your birthday, everyone congratulates you. Do you know how sad it is when no one does? When there are no balloons… and the big teddy bear – taller than a person – never shows up? And you want cake more than on any other day… but there isn’t any. No tablet, no roller skates, no bicycle—no one gives you anything. Just me, sitting quietly… crying as much as I want.
