Mariam (11-year-old): I go to school in old clothes. And I don’t have any spring shoes at all. It’s already warm, but I’m still wearing my winter boots. My mom can barely afford food for me and my sister – how could I ever ask her to buy me shoes? (Tears welled up in Mariam’s eyes as she said these words.)
She doesn’t even have toys. A bicycle would make her so happy. She has never held a mobile phone in her hands, but dreams of the day she’ll call her friends and say: “Hello, it’s Mariam. Save this number – it’s mine.”
