High up in the mountains of Svaneti lives a very sweet and beautiful little girl named Neli. And here’s what she whispered to me – very quietly, so no one else in the house could hear: “I really want red pants… and a bicycle that’s the same color.”

“Just please, don’t tell my mommy I asked for something,” Neli added, lowering her eyes, “because she worries a lot… She doesn’t want me to think I’m as poor as she is.”

Red pants, friends… That’s all she’s asking for. Just that. She’s such a gentle and modest little girl. She was so embarrassed to tell me what she wanted, I nearly cried. So innocent, so sincere – like only a child can be.

Neli is 7 years old. She lives high up in the mountains of Svaneti, where winters are freezing, and sometimes there’s not enough food even in summer.

She’s too shy to talk about her dreams, because she knows her mother is sick and needs medicine.

She may be modest, but deep down, she has dreams. I asked her to share a few of them with me – just between us – because it’s so important for children to believe that dreams really can come true, isn’t it? And I truly believe kind people can make that happen.

She dreams of having a bicycle.

“I don’t need a new one, or a big one,” she said. “Just a bike I can ride through the mountains, so I can catch up with the other kids… I really want to make friends.”

She also dreams of having a phone. Not for games. She wants to call her friends.

Neli is a strong little girl. She doesn’t complain. She helps her mother take care of her younger brothers.

But one day, she quietly said: “I just want to feel like I’m like everyone else… Like I’m seen.”

This little girl deserves warmth. She deserves joy. Her dreams aren’t just wishes – They’re her way of saying to the world: “I’m here too. I’m waiting. I believe.”
