Thank you countless times for deploying large-scale help! Thanks to more than two thousands of your active responses to this story, much has been accomplished for the Kantelashvili family. The support has been amazing! Thank you very much, friends, from the whole team of the Chernovetskyi Fund! Among the unresolved issues is the fact that the family does not have a bathroom. Also they do not have a heater for winter. None of us wants Alexi to go back to scrap collecting. We can avoid this by continuing to help the family. Join the ranks of the project’s regular helpers! And if you’re feeling down about household problems or unresolved issues, take a second to look at our Facebook posts. Or better yet, call any of our beneficiaries and all your problems will seem unimportant compared to the problems of the person you came to help in the most difficult moment of his life.

In this family, there are five wonderful children and a pregnant mother expecting her sixth child. There is also an abusive husband who, for years, physically abused and humiliated his wife in front of the children. Now he is behind bars, but the children and mother continue to love him, but the frightened mother of five children does not want to talk about that. The children called the police: they were deeply afraid that their father might beat their mother to death!
Here he is – the future Georgian hero who bravely defended his mom! But if we don’t lend a helping hand, he’ll end up being a regular visitor to junkyards searching for scrap metal together with his little siblings, instead of going to school! Is Georgia deserving of such a new generation?! And it doesn’t matter whose fault it is! What matters is that we have no right to pass by! Can you imagine the burden on this child to provide for such a huge family?!
Nana Kantelashvili (mother, 35 years old): The father of my children is currently in prison for physical violence against me. He was sentenced to two years of imprisonment. And my sixth child will be born in three months. Of course, every child needs their father to be around! Especially since children love their dad! Fathers, don’t be the cause of your children’s emotional pain! They are your flesh and blood!
This photo is of poor four-year-old Gabriel. He is standing in front of us on his knees, bloody from crawling, begging for food! It’s the boy’s fault that he is in such a condition! The boy is gravely ill! And the pieces of metal that Aleksi collects are not even enough for food, let alone to take his brother to the hospital for a checkup!
Aleksi (11 years old): Poverty is the scariest thing in the world… (That’s how this child, wise beyond his years, reasons. He should be playing soccer with his peers, enjoying his childhood, learning!) Before, Mom and I used to go for firewood, but my mom is pregnant, so she shouldn’t carry heavy loads. Now I go for firewood alone, so that my brothers and sisters don’t get sick from the cold anymore.
Aleksi spends whole days collecting scrap metal…
And then he waits for the scrap collection truck to come from the city to the village.
Aleksi: Sometimes they pay me 7 lari, sometimes they pay 10. Then I buy food for my brothers and sisters and for my pregnant mom with this money. She carries my little sister in her belly.
“If my mom is hungry, it means my little sister is hungry in her tummy too,” Alexi reasons like an adult.
The family lives in a half-collapsed house, lacking windows and with a leaky roof. When it rains, the children find themselves sleeping in damp beds, as the room is almost as wet as the outdoors.
This frequently results in the youngsters catching colds, causing their temperatures to spike. Sadly, due to poverty, their mother cannot afford to buy medicine from the pharmacy.
Aleksi: I’ve never been on a school trip. All the other kids get to go, but not me. It hurts that I can’t join them, and it makes me cry. But I try to keep my tears hidden so the teacher won’t see. Sometimes I feel like nobody cares about me.
– Aleksi, what does poverty mean to you?
Aleksi: Hunger, cold, and you know what else? We don’t have any hope for anything…
– My God, you’re just a child… Do you realize that? You answer as if you were an old man wise with experience. What will you be when you grow up?
Aleksi: I am a child from a poor family (the little one proudly replied to me). You ask, what will I be? Then know this: I’ll be nothing…
“I am a child from a poor family…What will I be? I’ll be nothing…”
– What an answer… I could barely hold back the tears talking to Aleksi! How handsome, how proud, how responsible he is… He’s truly Georgian! I’m sure everyone on Earth would want to have such a son! He didn’t ask for anything except love! Love, without which even a child immediately becomes old! We can’t let this happen! We can’t, my friends! Let’s show Aleksi and his brothers, and sisters that children are loved in Georgia, especially ones like him! Let’s give him something that money can’t buy! We are one family, and Aleksi must feel that!

This is how the kids greeted the new delivery of presents
Alexi is no longer collecting scrap! Tens of hundreds of friends of the Chernovetskyi Fund offered their help to the Kantelashvili family when they saw our story about the large family.
The house got a new roof instead of the broken tile roof, which was leaking, plastic windows and doors, which make the house warmer, comfortable, spacious beds for the children, a modern gas stove. Nana, a mother of many children, was supplied with groceries from all regions of Georgia
The house before your help
With the new roof and windows, the house has completely transformed!
Alexi can’t count how many people have offered to pay for his school trips. The little hero of our post gets as many calls as his mom and callers ask him not to keep quiet about the problems.
Marie: “It’s fun to dress as a team.”
– Alexi, I was most glad you didn’t go scrap collecting.
Alexi: I don’t, auntie. Here, look at my hands, the skin is not peeled off. We don’t have to go anywhere now, we have food at home and Gabriel has diapers. We sleep on nice beds, I’ll study at the new desk when school starts. I have my own laptop and my own personal phone, a lot of people call on it, everyone is interested in how we are. I put things in my closet instead of on the headboard. One room has gotten prettier, we put up new wallpapers. See? I like it.
Alexi: “This room has gotten prettier, there are new beds, wallpaper…”
The whole house has new plastic windows, all interior doors have been changed
– I like it too. How do you feel now, what’s your mood like?
Alexi: I feel so much like I’m in another country or in another life. So much has changed.
– Does it feel so strong?
Alexi: Yeah, it’s so weird when things are really bad and horrible and then it feels normal. It’s really nice though. It’s cool to eat good food, to sleep normally like other kids do. I feel good that my family has that, that my siblings are happy and smiling, that my mommy is laughing. I am happy that people heard me, a little boy, and helped my family. If it hadn’t helped, we probably would have died. But they heard me. And I love those people. They are very kind, and I wish them happiness and health.
A strange fruit! We’re about to try grapefruit for the first time.
«I’m going to share with you now! Help yourself, we have lots of goodies!”
“Marie, that’s a beautiful hoodie in your size. Try it on, daughter, and show yourself in it.”
“What practical home pants for all my tomboys!”
The kitchen is an upgrade too, with a superb gas stove
Nana (mom): People keep coming, keeping us happy, bringing food, clothes. And I do not get tired of blessing them. To wish them a good life, and all blessings, and God’s favor. Do you see the sheep tied up in the yard? Friends of the Fund brought it as a lamb. Such a joy for the children! They’re taking care of him, they’ve named him Kokhta. We’ll grow up and then we’ll decide what to do with him.
«The sheep was brought to us by friends of the Fund. It’s already a friend, we won’t eat it»
Marie: But we won’t eat it, it’s our friend!
Nana: And it is as a sign of our new life. I wish I could remember and name all the wonderful people who came, but it was difficult. The names are repetitive, and if I even wrote them down, it would make a big notebook or book. Georgi, Tamuna and Teona – to them we talked several times, and here my memory does not fail.
All the friends of the Fund are very worthy people. When they say “A man of great service”, it is about them. God gave them the best human qualities. I feel great respect and gratitude to them, which is inexpressible in words. Despite everything that has happened to me so far, I am a happy woman and I am lucky to have known such wonderful people
«What a great way to spend time doing kid stuff! Riding around the village on our new bikes!»
«For that laptop and phone, I would have been collecting scrap for years. But there are good people who heard me, little boy»
– Can we talk about what happened during the last pregnancy? Or is it still a very painful topic for you?
Nana: I can talk. I’ve gotten my act together and my nerves are calmer. What happened was that in the eighth month of my pregnancy, I lost the baby we were all really looking forward to – both me and my children. But poor life is often incompatible with the special position of a woman. Apparently, hard domestic labor, frequent starvation had such an effect… What should I do? We have no bathroom or shower, and I used to carry buckets of water, warm it to bathe the children….
– We sympathize with you with all our hearts, Nana. And we want to solve these problems so that they do not cripple your life.
Nana: Yes, thank you. That’s how it is: we don’t have a bathroom, no shower, no bathtub, no proper toilet. And I’ve already started to think about “Karma”, so that the children wouldn’t freeze in winter. It would save the children from colds and unnecessary illnesses, but I cannot buy it myself.
– Yes, by the way, Nana, do the local authorities also think about unresolved issues in parallel with you and us?
Nana: They thought about it and sent some clothes to the children after the Fund’s post on the Internet. According to their logic it turns out that two bags of clothes are all we need and we have no other problems.
