Elene (7 years old): “Auntie, look how much I suffer and how much pain I’m in!  When my mom takes me to the window, it hurts to see other girls playing ‘house’, running around, laughing. I want to get up on my feet and run too! Will you help me get surgery?”

No one is immune to it… And it’s so important that kind people are nearby at such moments. We thank you, Lord, for sending us this beautiful child, little Elene.  Thank you for giving us a chance to save her from pain and endless suffering! Please help! Seven-year-old Elene cries bitterly every time she’s put in her wheelchair. There’s not a single part of her little body that isn’t in pain.  Her spine and feet are so deformed that she can’t even stand, let alone walk.

Elene (7 years old): “I haven’t been able to walk for seven years.  My back hurts, and I can’t sit for long. I cry all the time. It breaks my heart to see everyone around me walking while I can’t.  I want to walk too! I want to stand on my feet and go to school and dance classes with my cousins.”

Elene is the only and long-awaited child in her family.   Her mother learned about her illness in the seventh month of pregnancy during an ultrasound meant to reveal the baby’s gender. The diagnosis: congenital spinal defect – Spina Bifida. The doctors also said she was too weak to survive. You can imagine what a shock this was for the parents. But they pulled themselves together and clung to hope that the doctors were wrong. Thank God, Elene survived, much to the joy of her mother and father! It was a gift from God who heard their prayers.

Due to her critical condition, Elene had spinal surgery on her third day of life.  At three months old, she had a shunt placed in her head to prevent fluid buildup in her brain due to hydrocephalus.

Despite her health problems, Elene is incredibly active. She doesn’t wait for adults to carry her – she lies on her stomach and crawls across the floor herself.  Her stubborn nature helps her overcome every obstacle.

Elene: “The doctor told me that after the surgery, I will be able to walk. That’s why I want the surgery as soon as possible! I’m a little afraid of the needles. But I’m brave! I can handle it! But my parents don’t have the money to pay for the surgery. I don’t know what to do!”

I need help! Your help! Please help me!

Meri (mother 29 years old):  “We tried to seek asylum in France for free treatment, but we didn’t qualify for any assistance. We ran out of money and had to return. We’ve already sold everything we had. Now, our only hope is in the kind-hearted people who will take pity on our little angel. The first stage of the surgery requires $15,000. After that, we’ll need costly long-term rehabilitation. The doctors promise to get my daughter on her feet. If we don’t have the surgery now, we’ll miss the chance, and it will become impossible to help Elene. Two years ago, my daughter had her first epileptic seizure. She’s had frequent convulsions. I couldn’t leave her with anyone. I had to quit my job to take care of her. My husband also had to stop working because I couldn’t cope alone. We’re living with my parents now because our home is not suitable for living. We can’t raise the money for the surgery on our own. Without your help, we won’t make it.”

Elene weighs 35 kg. My husband and I take turns carrying her in our arms.

Meri: “You know, it’s terrifying to think that if we don’t raise enough money for the surgery, my daughter will suffer for the rest of her life because of poverty. And we’ll suffer alongside her. Please help us! I visit the Chernovetskyi Fund website every day and read joyful stories about how you help sick children.
How I wish that one day you would post good news about our little girl, who, with the help of kind people, will stand on her feet and begin to walk!”
