Elon Musk’s company Neuralink has announced the first implantation of its Blindsight neurochip, designed to restore vision to blind individuals. The surgery is scheduled for late 2025. Musk made the announcement at the America PAC event in Wisconsin.
“At first, the image will be blurry,” the entrepreneur said, “but over time, the device will be able to give a person superhuman vision.”
Project timeline:
Neuralink’s plans to develop a visual prosthesis became public in 2024.
At the time, the company reported successful testing in monkeys – with no animals harmed during the trials.
Neuralink was founded in 2016. In 2019, the company demonstrated a chip capable of transmitting brain signals via Bluetooth, and in 2021, it released a video showing a monkey named Pager playing video games using only its mind.
In early 2024, Neuralink implanted a chip in a human for the first time – a 29-year-old man paralyzed from the shoulders down. Within a month, he was able to control a computer cursor using just his thoughts.
Blindsight is the company’s next step. According to Musk, the device may one day allow users not only to perceive the visible spectrum—but also infrared and ultraviolet light.
