The Price of Politeness: Woman’s Liver Displaced After Suppressing a Cough
A relaxing flight turned into a medical ordeal for one woman. In an effort not to disturb fellow passengers, she repeatedly suppressed a strong cough – ultimately leading to a serious injury. During the flight, pressure fluctuations and muscular strain caused a rupture in her abdominal muscles. As a result, part of her liver slipped through a hernial opening in the abdominal wall.
The initial symptoms were subtle: pain, a bruise stretching from her navel to her back, and bloating. It wasn’t until several days later that she sought medical attention. Due to the hernia’s location – near the ribs, diaphragm, and spine – surgeons faced challenges placing an implant.
Before undergoing surgery, the patient was advised to lose weight, which took several weeks. Fortunately, the operation was successful, and recovery took approximately three months.
