Nine-year-old Mariam, with tears in her eyes, stood staring at a Barbie doll in the shop window. The cruel irony was that the doll wore a beautiful dress – while our little Georgian girl’s clothes were old and faded.
Mariam looks sadly at the store windows filled with pretty dolls and teddy bears, thinking that new toys are a dream that will never come true.
She is growing up in a very poor, large family. She knows her parents work tirelessly in the fields just to put food on the table. Mariam sees the tired eyes of her mother and tries not to ask for anything extra.
