The desperate cries of a child echoed from across the road. As a correspondent of the Chernovetskyi Fund, I instantly knew it was Anna. The little girl I was coming to visit for the very first time. And indeed, when I entered the room, I saw a heartbreaking scene. The child, curled up in pain, looked at me with pleading eyes – begging a “stranger aunt” for help.

Five-year-old Anna is a true little angel. She suffers from a rare genetic disorder. She cannot talk and struggles walking. Since birth, she has had dislocated hip joints and deformed feet. Poor, poor child. If not for timely surgery, Anna would have been left disabled for life. To pay for her treatment, the family had to take out a loan – and now half of their meager social allowance goes to cover that loan.

Right now, Anna desperately needs orthopedic shoes. Her poor mother, in despair, had no choice but to buy second-hand sandals for her daughter – because there was no money for new ones.

And this is Anna’s younger sister. One-year-old Sonya doesn’t even have the strength to cry. The child is weak from hunger. There isn’t enough breast milk, and the mother has nothing else to feed her baby with – the parents simply cannot afford baby formula.

Just imagine: your children starving. How does it feel like to see their tears of hunger?

The only food this family has is bean soup and stale bread.

Is this really all a breastfeeding mother and her five children should have to survive on?

Earlier, the mother worked as a street cleaner to feed her children, but now, with a newborn in her arms, she cannot work. The father does seasonal field labor.  He works hard just to earn bread and diapers for the little ones. There is no money for house repairs —

the home lacks even basic necessities. The toilet is outside.  The children have to be bathed in a basin, which is a real ordeal: first, the mother must carry water and then heat it on the stove. In winter, the children shiver in the cold room, and because of this, they often fall ill.

Mother Nino asks, first of all, for help in arranging a proper bathroom so the little ones can bathe like human beings. The family also needs a refrigerator, a gas stove, a TV, food, baby formula, and diapers. And, of course – orthopedic shoes for little Anna.

This hardworking family also cares for a 93-year-old grandmother with severe dementia. The elderly woman can no longer take care of herself – she is like a sixth child for Nino.

This is a cry for help. These good, kind children remind us that in a world full of abundance, there are people whose lives are a constant struggle for the most basic things – for food, for warmth, for the chance to live with dignity. Reach out your hand to them, and may the angels in heaven sing to you in return. “God grant you many years!”
