Journalist: “I can’t breathe…” Gia wrote those words on a piece of paper because throat cancer has taken away his voice. Today, this father of three is fighting for every breath.

Gia cannot speak. When a journalist from the Chernovetskyi Charity Fund asked him how he was feeling, he picked up a pen and wrote:

“I’m in unbearable pain. I can’t breathe. I’m suffocating.”

There was a time when dozens of passengers heard his voice every day. Giya worked as a taxi driver, providing for his family. He is the father of three children. 

Then what seemed like an ordinary sore throat appeared.

At first, he didn’t think much of it. But as the days passed, his condition only grew worse. According to his family, the doctors explained that his airway had narrowed to almost the width of a thread. Just a little more, and it could have become completely blocked. Tests revealed stage IV laryngeal cancer. 

An emergency surgery saved his life. Doctors performed a tracheostomy. Now, the only way air can reach his lungs is through a small tube in his neck.

Gia must now undergo three courses of chemotherapy. Only after that will doctors be able to determine the next stage of his treatment and whether surgery is still possible. 

Every day he needs medication and special tracheostomy supplies. Without them, he cannot breathe properly. 

Gia is no longer able to work. His wife, Maia, stays by his side around the clock, caring for him, which means she cannot work either. The family has been left with almost no means of support. 

According to Maia, their children desperately want to help their parents, but simply cannot. Their son has a large family of his own and struggles to provide even for his own children.

Maya, 60: “I’m terrified.

I’ve already lost two younger brothers.

Now I live every day afraid of losing my husband.”

Today, Maia is not asking for the impossible.

She is asking for help to save her husband’s life.
Help with the cost of his medication.
Help paying for the tracheostomy supplies he depends on every day.
Help so Gia can continue his treatment.

As the Chernovetskyi Charity Fund journalist was about to leave, Gia gently stopped her.

Once again, he picked up a sheet of paper.

Slowly, with great effort, he wrote a few words and handed it to her.

It said:

“I don’t want to die. I want to live.”

Gia dreams of watching his grandchildren grow up. Of holding his children in his arms at least one more time. He wants to remain with the family he loves more than anything in the world.
