0901200270“Ma’am, look. I used to have very long hair. Down to here,” – says 10-year-old Sofiko and points to her back. – “But I cut it off.”
“Why?” – I ask her.
“We had no food. My parents had no money. And then I decided to help all of us – I sold my hair. It will grow back. But we bought food,” – explains Sofiko.
I became speechless. I had a lot of questions in my head: should the little girls think about what family needs at such a young age? Why should children starve?
There are three of them in the Tsetskhladze family: Irakli 12 years old, Sofiko 10 years old, and Salome 8 years old. The kids admit that they don’t remember when they ate even the simplest delicacies. They are short of money, so they have to deprive themselves of meat and dairy products… And they have long forgotten about sweets and desserts. Mother, 32-year-old Shorena, with tears in her eyes, says that they almost have no money to buy food or clothes. A poor woman has no idea how to raise children in such conditions.
A large family lives on the outskirts of Batumi in a cramped, dilapidated, and damp house. The small shack barely accommodates a family of five. There is only one room in the hut: this is a bedroom, a kitchen, a living room, and everything else …
– Shorena, how do you live in such conditions?
Shorena: I don’t know how we manage to bear with that. Each gust of wind not only blows away the roof, but even makes the walls sway, and takes the wooden floor from under our feet. When it rains, it drips on us from above, it’s cold at home all the time – the children and I are freezing, even though we heat the room with a stove. There was such a wind yesterday – the children and I did not sleep, we thought that the house was going to collapse on us, we spent the whole night in fear. There are huge holes in the floorboards and snakes crawl into the house. Once I opened a chest of drawers and found a huge curled-up snake laying there. If not for my husband, who promptly came to help me, it would have bitten me… It’s even scary when I recall it!
– Shorena, how did you meet your husband?
Shorena: I was friends with his sister-in-law – his brother’s wife. I used to visit her quite often. Once Zauri came to visit them. He looked at me, and we sensed a spark between us. Zauri romanced me for about six months. Then he asked for my hand in marriage. So, we got married. I have a wonderful husband, he is very caring, he adores the children, is never lazy to work. But, alas, there is no work…
– What do you live on now?
Shorena: We get a social allowance – 300 GEL and food coupons for children – 90 GEL. We can also go to the social canteen. The canteen did not work during the quarantine, so they sometimes sent us foodstuffs: cereals, pasta… It helped us to survive.
– Is that money enough for you?
Shorena: It’s absolutely not enough! I often have to make a choice between buying food and clothes. How to distribute this money? I don’t know.
– Does anybody help you?
Shorena: Yes, our relatives and neighbors help as much as they can. If not for them, I don’t even know how we would have survived!
Sometimes they bring us clothes, sometimes food – I am immensely grateful to everyone!
– Did you address the local authorities for help?
Shorena: Yes, many times. They give us a social allowance – that’s it. Apparently, they suppose that we don’t need any other support.
– What help do you need first of all? Maybe you need anything for your home?
Shorena: We need lots of things. Just look at what terrible conditions we live in! Five persons huddling at 14 square meters. We soon will have a new baby in the house – a baby will be born in a couple of months. How will we live then?
We don’t have enough beds. I have two small sofas on which my children sleep: my son lies with his legs bent – his sofa is too short for him, and on the second one the girls sleep, sometimes they fall down from there at night because they cannot fit there together.
My husband and I sleep on the floor – we lay a mattress and blankets. I am pregnant. How can I sleep on the floor?
We really need wardrobes and dressers – there is no place to store clothes. We need a refrigerator too. We have one at home, but it is old and does not work. I have no place to store food, so it often goes bad and we have to throw it away…
I’d also like to have a gas stove. We have one in our room, but it does not work and I use it as a table. You know, one can endure all the hardships when there is enough food. I have to permanently think about what to cook for children and with what. I’m tired of living like this!
– What is your everyday diet? What do you usually eat?
Shorena: Pasta, cereals, soups. I make liquid food. I have already forgotten when we had meat, chicken, or dairy products. It’s a luxury for us. My children are not picky, they eat everything I cook. But they miss a lot of things. For instance, they see how other children, their peers, live. They tell me that other children buy chocolates. I try to explain to them that soon they will be able to buy sweets for themselves, they just need to wait a little bit… I try to distract them that way… But my heart hurts.
– Shorena, soon you will give birth to a baby again. Have you already decided how to name him?
Shorena: Doctors said I will have a daughter. So we decided to name her Cecilia. Actually, my daughters decided to name their future sister Cecilia. They are so happy!
– Beautiful name for a beautiful girl! And why Cecilia?
Salome: I have a classmate named Cecilia, we are friends with her. I really like this name. Then my older sister and I told my mother that if a girl is born we should name her Cecilia. The names of all three sisters will start with “s” Sofiko, Salome, and Cecilia. Isn’t it interesting, ma’am?
– You thought up well, well-done! Come on, tell me: what do you think your little sister will be like?
Salome: She will be beautiful as my mom and Sofiko. (laughs.)
– What are you dreaming about, dear?
Salome: I dream of becoming a dentist someday because my mother wanted to be a dentist, but she didn’t manage to. I will be a good dentist. And I also dream of having my own room. It will be beautiful and pink…
Irakli: You will have your own room and a whole house! I’ll grow up and build a big house for us. But the most important thing is that I will buy a lot of food so that we all will have enough!
– Have you already decided what you want to be?
Irakli: Yes, of course! I want to become a farmer. I dream to have my own big farm, breeding different animals, selling them both in Georgia and in other countries. They recently gave me rabbits, I take care of them… They are very beautiful!!
– Dear Sofiko, who do you want to be?
Sofiko (10-year-old): I want to be a singer. I love singing, music is my life. I can’t live without songs and music. I like to sing all the songs, just any songs.
– And what is your biggest dream?
Sofiko: So that we have our own good home and that we will be a happy family. And I also want a cake. I haven’t eaten sweets for so long, that I already forgot how they taste. But I remember that they are very delicious.
– Shorena, and what are you dreaming about?
Shorena: So that everything is good for my children! So that they do not starve! What else could a mother dream of? Only about the well-being of her children!
– What do you believe in?
Shorena: I believe in God, I believe in my good compatriots because strangers have always helped me in my life. I believe that they will not leave us now as well. In the meantime, we still live in eternal troubles that have no end!

The most “princess’” bed for little Cecily…
REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS TO GET CLOSER TO THE WORK OF MERCY!
“Oh, what a beautiful bed Cecily has! It’s “princess’ bed”! When I saw it, I immediately thought that she would not have to sleep in a bad bed, like me and Sopho, and I was very happy. Cecily is so little and would not be able to sleep on the floor with our mother,” little Salome tells me. She fluffs the soft pillows in her sister’s bed and looks at me with her mischievous eyes. You can see how happy she is with so many gifts.
Cecily is happy – her teddy bear friends are by her.
And the older sister – Sopho – quickly puts on her blue tracksuit and shows it to me: “Look! Do you think it suits me? An aunt with the same name as me, brought it to me. All Sophos are kind like me, right?! Well, I think so…”
These two little Rapunzels are 9 and 11 years old. I named them both Rapunzel because they have long and beautiful hair. They decided to help their family, which was on the verge of starvation: they cut off their hair, sold it, and bought food with the money they earned. They also have a brother – Irakli, who dreams to become a farmer and have a lot of chickens so that his parents and sisters never go hungry.
Our Fund published a post about the large Tsetskhladze family on July 25:
https://chernovetskyifund.ge/en/projects/finished/758-tsetskhladze/description/.
Irakli shows me an electric kettle and assures me that the water in it boils very quickly, and it took a long time on the woodstove: you had to light it, then you had to wait until it warmed up. Irakli was even late to school. Their daily diet was so meager that they often had to have only bread and tea alone.
– Shorena, first of all, I want to congratulate you on the birth of a new family member. You have a wonderful baby girl. It’s a real happiness! Can you tell us about Cecily?
“Cecily makes us happy”
Shorena: You are right, I gave birth to my fourth child – my fourth joy. I had quite a difficult pregnancy, and when I was eight months pregnant, I had to have a C-section. Despite these problems, the girl was born perfectly healthy, 50 centimeters tall and weighing 2 kilograms 700 grams. Every day I thank God for giving me another child. All five of us dote on Cecily. My husband says I act like it’s my first child. It is true. She is my fourth child, but she made me feel again the happiness I experienced when Irakli, Sopho, and Salome were born. My children and my family are my happiness. I have nothing else.
– Shorena, as far as I see your children are happy with the gifts.
Shorena: Sure! They had not eaten sweets for so many months. They didn’t have normal clothes. Not to mention home appliances. When I saw a gas stove and kitchen appliances, I did not know what to do with joy, what to unpack first. But who let me do that? While I was coming to my senses, my children opened all the boxes. (Laughs.)
“Well, what is there? I have a blender. Do you have a kettle? Yes!”и
Many thanks to your Fund and all those people who gave less to their children and have given to mine instead! To those who helped us even with one lari and made my angels so happy.
Very soon I became unable to breastfeed Cecily… What kind of milk could I have when I was starving and was deprived of vitamins? That’s why, these cereals made me infinitely happy – this is food for my baby.
“Cecily likes cereals, but we don’t have the opportunity to buy them often”
And also, baby creams… Where would I get the money for such a luxury? But our biggest joy became the crib-playpen. And we needed gas stove so badly! Oh, I don’t know how to list them all. I am very, very grateful!
“We have never got so many gifts at once”
– Shorena, have you made new friends? Did anyone else respond? Who do you particularly remember?
Shorena: People called me – they were concerned about our situation. Maya Chenek came to visit us from Tbilisi. She brought us a lot of groceries: flour, sugar, rice, cucumbers, tomatoes, sweets, fruits. She made my children happy with beautiful clothes. Many thanks to this wonderful woman! Maya also brought us a cake. Irakli is a real cake fan, and everyone has already heard about it. (Laughs.)
You heard my girl talking about Sopho, didn’t you? This is Mrs. Sofiko – an immensely warm and kind person, she visited us twice. The first time she brought clothes for my children. The second time she came to Irakli’s birthday and brought him a very beautiful cake. Mrs. Lali – Lali Liluashvili, the noblest person, came along with her.
Irakli: Do you know how delicious the cake was?! I really wanted it to not end. I had the happiest birthday ever!
Shorena: I can’t help but mention Mrs. Theona, who visited us with her family in September. She brought toys: balls, badminton, and stuff for school. School was about to start, and I had no way to buy anything for my children to get prepared for the upcoming school year.
Many thanks to Sopho, Maya, Teona, and a lot of other kind people who take care of poor mothers with many children like me. To those who do not think, like others: why give birth to children if there is no income?! How do they know what I had to go through?!
I had no children for many years until the Lord gave me Irakli. I begged and cried for years: “God, give me a child, let me experience the happiness of motherhood. I promise to raise as many children as you give me, no matter how difficult it’ll be.”
The Lord heard my prayers and I got pregnant. It was just the New Year. We call Irakli a New Year’s gift! But when I was two months pregnant, the doctors said that I urgently had to get rid of the baby because I had a virus. They assured me that if I did not do an abortion, the child would be born sick. I did not listen to them… I wanted to have a child so much that I could not have an artificial abortion and kill my own, albeit sick, child!
I said: “I will give birth to him. This is my child, a gift from God, and I will accept him as he is.” Irakli was born perfectly healthy. The Lord is Great and Almighty! I trusted Him, and He gave me four angels, one more beautiful than the other. I live for them! They are my wealth. I don’t dream of anything else. I want only one thing, so that they live in comfort and do not starve. Until my husband Zaur’s health condition worsened, life was easier. He can no longer work as he used to.
– What disease does he have?
Shorena: He had been ill with tuberculosis – his lungs got severely damaged. In addition, he has diabetes. We have no means to treat him. We have no money even for a piece of bread – what kind of doctor and health can we talk about.
– Shorena, do the authorities help you? Was there any feedback from them after the post was published?
Shorena: Unfortunately, they are too busy to notice us. We received one call from the administration, they told us: “We help you with a free canteen, and that’s enough…”
In addition, as you probably know, children under three years old can’t be enrolled at this canteen. As if a child under three years of age does not need to eat.
– Shorena, can I talk to your children? Which one of you to start with?
Irakli: With me, I’m the eldest! I am a good boy!
– Why do you consider yourself a good boy?
Irakli: I help my parents, collect firewood when we are cold.
– Are you often cold?
Irakli: Yes. We often have no firewood. Then mom wraps us in a quilt, a blanket, and we warm each other.
– Irakli, what gift did you enjoy the most?
Irakli: Everything was amazing, especially the cake. I also enjoyed the teapot. Do you know how long we haven’t eaten sweets?! I am grateful to everyone who helped us.
– Sopho, what gift did you like the most?
Sopho: I liked clothes. When I opened them, I tried them on for an hour – there were a lot of clothes, and everything was beautiful. Sofiko brought it to me. I want to send her many kisses, she made me so happy. Everyone in my class is dressed nicely, but I… I never had anything.
I also liked the gas stove. We will cook soups faster. I don’t like soups, but we can’t cook anything else. Other food is expensive. And my parents don’t have money.
“I will try to cook a delicious dinner for us, and delicious porridge for Cecily!”
Salome: And I was happy that our little sister would not be hungry, like us. And she will sleep softly! Thank you for buying Cecily such a “princess’” bed.
– Shorena, I know you need a lot more. What worries you the most right now?
Shorena: My biggest pain is the state of our house. We live on 14 square meters. But who cares about the size of the room when our house collapses on our heads! Literally. In summer, snakes are our frequent guests. I keep an eye out so they don’t bite anyone. In winter we shiver from the cold. When it rains, there are puddles all over the house. During a strong wind, my children tremble with fear. You hear such sounds that it seems that everything is about to collapse. Who will give us a house? But if anyone would help us at least with building materials, then we can do something with our own hands. As a man, I would help my husband, and we would manage to fulfill the cherished dream of our children.
Salome: I want a pink room. I would live there with my sisters.

Children have nothing – what a pink room you can talk about. They take turns attending online classes through their mother’s phone. Shorena’s brother gave her this phone, so that the children would not fall behind in their studies.
