The Janelidze family was graced with two kind and wonderful boys. Their mother, Eliza, was overjoyed beyond words. And their father, Geronti, would proudly say to everyone, “I am raising two brave sons for my homeland.” Indeed, as the years went by, the boys grew more handsome and, most importantly, were known throughout the Abasha district as well-mannered and kind-hearted brothers. Most people held this loving family in high regard. But envy is a cruel thing—there were those who begrudged the couple’s boundless love and happiness. That envy bore bitter fruit. It is heartbreaking to write these words: neither of those young men is alive today. Gangrene and liver cirrhosis, two merciless diseases, claimed their lives. Since then, every day for their devastated parents has been a living hell. Their poor mother clings to old photographs of her children, and her heart feels like it is being torn in two. No one can truly understand the fiery agony consuming her heart. Eliza’s soul aches in ways only a mother who has lost her children could comprehend. No one else…

By some twist of fate, we, dear friends, have become the closest people to this lonely couple. There’s no one else they can rely on but us. Dali and Akaki, both gravely ill, have no home, no medicine, and no food. Everything they once had was sold to pay for medical treatment. They have to move from one place to another just to avoid paying rent. Dali (60 years old): “If not for our neighbors, we wouldn’t be here anymore. We would have died of hunger or cold. The kindest woman, Tea, shares her bread and firewood with us. And she has a family of her own; she’s a mother of many children. We’re so grateful to her. May God bless her! We don’t have children of our own—there’s no one else to take care of us.” How much pain and hardship can a person endure?

Saba is just four years old. He suffers from a severe retinal disease—retinopathy—that could lead to complete blindness in just a few days. Right now, he can only see objects very close to him. Everything else is like a blur, shrouded in fog. His vision is deteriorating rapidly, and nothing seems to stop it. The day Saba was born should have been the happiest day of his mother’s life. Instead, she heard the devastating words in the delivery room: “Your son isn’t breathing.” Saba’s life began with resuscitation, doctors, and a tough battle for survival. He miraculously pulled through, but it was later revealed that he had a congenital eye defect—retinal detachment – that caused him to lose his vision.

Mirian was 35 years old when, on that fateful evening, a car struck him as he stood on the sidewalk. The driver lost control, and the blood of an innocent young man was spilled. Mirian suffered injuries that were deemed incompatible with life. His head injuries were so severe that doctors gave him less than a one percent chance of survival. He had multiple skull fractures, and you can probably imagine what that means. Mirian spent three months in a coma. The first surgery was performed in Moscow, but his condition only worsened afterward. Following the unsuccessful surgery, Mirian was transported to Georgia by a mobile resuscitation vehicle. In total, the poor young man underwent four brain surgeries. And throughout all this time, he felt nothing, perceived nothing, and was barely distinguishable from the dead—except that he was breathing. But Mirian’s heroic mother refused to give up. This poor woman achieved the impossible for her son. Indeed, after the fourth brain surgery, with God’s help, Mirian emerged from his critical condition, and for the first time, he had a real chance of survival.

“I miss him very much … I want to hug him and to play with him so much. He is cold there. And mommy and I are cold here …” Little Tea misses her father. A healthy man, he suddenly died. He left his girls alone – his wife Lia and his 6-year-old daughter Tea. They are absolutely alone. And they have nothing… “That’s how she talks about her dad all day long. Sits by his photograph, tells him how we are getting on. She was very attached to him. She loved him very much. She loved him even more than me. Father’s daughter! It’s very hard for me too. Can you imagine how it feels to lose a perfectly healthy man in a week? My world has turned upside down, the earth has disappeared beneath my feet. I don’t know what to do, how to live… I try to restrain myself, not to be too emotional. I know that he looks at us from heaven and helps us.”

When I asked them: “Can you remember anything good?” – the girls just looked at each other and shrugged. They haven’t got a single bright memory in their life, though they are quite adults: Anna is 17 and Barbara is 16. They do not remember their mother, they can hardly remember their father, they only remember their grandmother. Old and sick … She died in their arms. The only dear person. This is not a New Year’s story, it will not make our hearts feel warm, and we cannot change the past of these sisters, but maybe we will be able to change their future … Who knows, maybe miracles happen on Christmas Eve? The tragedy began when Anna’s and Barbara’s sister was born… Yes, you heard right. Their mother strangled the baby while feeding. “Probably by accident,” says Anna. “Maybe not,” adds Barbara. In 2006, their mother was sent to prison for 9 years. The girls have not seen her since.

Even at Christmas they will be hungry and cold. When delicious smell of roasted piglet and fresh pastries comes from their neighbors, they will just take some bread, close their eyes and imagine how delicious it is … They are used to it, they always do like that. One can endure hunger and cold… But what then? Who will these children be when they grow up? What will they become if they don’t have any childhood?

“There is nothing more tasty than bread…” says Tinatin, a wonderful brown-eyed girl (5-year-old), clutching and kissing a loaf of bread given to her by her kind neighbors … She is right, a loaf of bread is a festive dish in this dilapidated house, which is about to collapse and bury its unfortunate inhabitants alive … Because, all their modest income is spent on medications… “I can’t help buying medications. This means that the grandmother will die! – says mom Maya. – I cannot watch a person suffocating in front of my eyes!” Evil fate confronted this kind Georgian woman with a terrible choice: buy medications for a seriously ill old woman and leave her little daughter hungry, or buy food for the child and leave the old woman to fate… In the hope of the mercy of Lord and good people, the poor woman addressed our Fund. Because Georgians will never leave their neighbors in trouble.

“I do my best to survive!” – says 58-year-old Madonna. She’s eking a meager living out… Cold, hunger and hellish pains torment the unfortunate woman and don’t let her rest. The exhausted woman lives in a damp, cold tiny room 9 steps in length. It fits only one bed. Even we, experienced Fund employees, got horrified, when we entered her house – a tiny damp cold room, where she had to huddle.
