0901200270“I really, really want to celebrate my birthday for the first time in my life! I can’t walk because I’m considered disabled… But aren’t I a human being too? Are disabled children in Georgia not allowed to celebrate birthdays??! I want so badly to show off a beautiful cake to the healthy girls at kindergarten…Maybe someone will even give me some meat as a gift… I’ve never tasted it before!
And I hope all of you are happy too – don’t forget, your children are waiting for their birthdays… Never forget! Because if you do, the child will feel hurt… My mom says I’m very kind, and when I grow up and have money, I’ll congratulate everyone, on every birthday! I’m still a little girl, and when I look at myself in the mirror, I think I’m a pretty Georgian girl… So why can’t I celebrate? Is there a law that says children with disabilities aren’t allowed to have birthdays?!
But when I have lots and lots of money, I’ll celebrate all the girls’ birthdays – yours too. I’m a good girl! And I love yummies.”
That’s how little Barbare will wake up on the morning of May 15 – with those sad eyes – on what should be a magical day: her birthday. But for Barbare, no morning has ever felt magical.
Barbare (5-year-old): “I want a pretty cake for my birthday… a purple one. I’d invite all my friends from kindergarten. There’d be lots of sweets on the table… and maybe even meat dishes. But mommy never cooks meat. We only have soup—sometimes with potatoes, sometimes with pasta.”
She said this while eating a cucumber a kind neighbor had given her – with the appetite of someone biting into a crispy fried chicken drumstick.
Barbare: “For my birthday, I want a beautiful doll and a princess dress. I only have old clothes… and no toys at all, auntie,” (addressing the Fund’s reporter).
Barbare cannot walk. Her father abandoned the family too. Kind people, let’s not forget this little girl. Let’s make May 15 magical for her. Let’s bring light back into the eyes of a child who deserves to feel joy.
