11-year-old Mariam, a beautiful girl from the mountains of Svaneti, carries a heavy sorrow – her mother is seriously ill. Her most cherished dream is for her beloved mom to recover. This smart, sensitive girl shyly shares her childhood dreams with the Fund’s correspondent, because she’s too embarrassed to ask her mother even for something simple or inexpensive. She knows her mother needs medication, and that her six younger siblings need food on the table and clothes to wear every day. 

Correspondent: Honestly, friends, it was so hard to get this proud little beauty to open up, even just a little, about the tender dreams of her heart.

Mariam kept saying the most important thing was to make her mother well again. And she repeated it with such passion, that I felt ashamed to interrupt her with “childish dreams.” No one in Georgia had ever asked her that question before. A gift? Why? For what? Why would someone come just to see her?  

Oh Lord, what wonderful children You have given to our great country! Please, God, may they always have everything they need!

I reminded Mariam that children love bicycles – and I saw her eyes light up! Yes! A perfect hit. And then I thought, how sad it is to grow up surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of Svaneti and not have a bicycle to ride down the most beautiful paths in the world… That’s not just unfair – it’s heartbreaking.  

Mariam (11): “Every evening, I watch from the window as the neighbor kids ride their colorful bikes… Can you imagine? Some have red ones, others blue… I often draw the bicycle of my dreams – a pink one, with a little basket in front, where I could put some pretty flowers and ride just like the other kids… But I can’t tell Mom. I know it would upset her so much. And instead of getting a bike, I’ll just end up soaked in her loving tears.” “No. I won’t ask.  Never! It’s better to use that money to buy her medicine.”

By the way, Mariam doesn’t even have a phone to take photos of the stunning Svaneti landscapes and share them with her classmates. And yet, this lovely girl from the mountains is truly drawn to photography.

Mariam: “Here in Svaneti, it’s like walking through a fairy tale. I want to capture that beauty too… I dream of having a phone that can take pictures. I want to show them to my classmates… Maybe one day, I’ll be a little photographer in the mountains…”
