6-year-old Nia’s joy about starting first grade has turned into sadness. She believes that no school will accept poor children who don’t have school supplies. Nia also worries that her classmates will laugh at her because of her old clothes and worn-out shoes.
Nia (6 years old): “My dad died, and my mommy doesn’t have any money, so she can’t make me happy with anything. I finished kindergarten and I’m supposed to start first grade this year, but I don’t have a backpack, or books, or notebooks, or even a pencil case. And I don’t have any new clothes or shoes for school.
At my kindergarten graduation, I wore old clothes instead of a pretty dress. And now I’ll have to wear the same old clothes on my first day of school. I feel so embarrassed and hurt.” 
Nia: “I dream of having my own little bed. There are five of us kids and only two beds. It’s really cramped. I’d also love to have a beautiful Barbie doll and a bicycle. All the other kids have bikes – except me! Why am I worse than anyone else? The old bike we had has broken wheels, and it doesn’t work anymore.”
