“Auntie, I won’t go to first grade looking like a beggar! And my three-year-old little brother and I don’t even have warm clothes. So when grandma fires up the oven to bake bread, despite the smoke, we stand nearby just to keep warm. It’s hard to breathe from the smoke – we cough. But isn’t that better than freezing from the cold?” Smoke contains three dangerous components: simple suffocating agents, chemical suffocating agents, and irritants. Simple suffocating agents push out oxygen, leaving only carbon dioxide (carbon monoxide). Chemical suffocating agents, such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and hydrogen sulfide, block the body’s ability to transport and absorb oxygen. Irritants like ammonia and sulfur dioxide damage the normal function of the mucous membranes.
I met three-year-old Lazare and six-year-old Gennadi in their beautiful village not long ago. I visited them on the very day school lessons began. I had chosen that time on purpose, so that Gennady would already be home from school. To my surprise, the boy was at home with tears in his eyes. The reason he hadn’t gone to school was heartbreaking…
Gennady (6-year-old): “Auntie, I had old torn shoes that grandma glued back together so I could go to first grade. But my shirt was so faded from the summer sun… How could I go to school looking like that, on my very first day?”
Gennady: “This broken toy car is my only toy. So that other kids wouldn’t laugh at me, I told them my mom had bought it new, and then it broke. But in reality, I got it already broken. Still, I brought it home and left it in the yard, so the other kids would think I had toys too.”
Lazare (3-year-old): “I’ve always dreamed of having a puffy winter jacket, but that dream never came true. I love puffy jackets, I really do… I just dreamed of wearing one, even for a few minutes. Last year I asked a boy my age to let me try on his jacket, just for a couple of minutes, but he refused. He probably looked at my faded sweater and thought it was dirty. But it was just old.”
Lazare collects sticks and dry branches to light the stove in their cold, dark room.
While searching for firewood, the child wandered into the thorns. Just look how huge they are!
Dear friends of the Fund, you might think poverty is this family’s biggest problem. If only that were the case. But sadly, these children stand on the edge of orphanhood: their 28-year-old mother has been diagnosed with an aggressive malignant tumor, stage IV.
From poverty to orphanhood – it’s just one step…
Look at the fear, sorrow, pain, and hopelessness in the eyes of these little angels…
Kind-hearted people, you understand how important it is right now to give these poor brothers at least a little joy, to make their childhood dreams come true.
