“All the kids in the yard ride their bicycles… and I just watch. I want one too, but I know that my mom and dad can’t afford it,” – the boy admits quietly.

Gionest is only 9 years old. There isn’t even enough money for bread in their house – let alone for toys or a phone. He stands by the road, watching other children ride by on their bikes or holding phones in their hands. And at that moment, his eyes fill with a sadness that’s hard to put into words.

“I’ve never had a phone. My classmates watch videos on theirs, read, and learn so many interesting things from them. I really want to study with a phone too…”

When the Fund’s correspondent asked the 9-year-old boy, “What do you dream about?”, the child got confused – as if no one had ever asked about his dreams before. Just being asked about his deepest wish made him so happy – can you imagine how boundless his joy will be if that dream comes true? 

For someone, it might just be a toy. But for Gionest, a bicycle is a symbol of the childhood he’s barely had. He believes that one day his dream will come true.
