“I came home and cried my heart out… because the other kids wouldn’t let me ride their bicycle. They said: ‘You’re always asking – why don’t you have your own by now?’ This winter, 9-year-old Gionest and 13-year-old Mariam will once again be left to freeze and fall ill, living in these ruins without windows. Every time we begin to write a story like this, we think – this can’t be real! It is impossible for people to live like this!
REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS FIND THE WAY TO GOD!
Nine-year-old Gionest didn’t know how to answer. He turned away, holding back his tears, ran home – and then burst out crying, bitterly and helplessly.
‘Why did you hold back your tears in front of them, and why did you cry at home? What hurt you so much?’ I asked the little boy. He answered: ‘I didn’t want to cry in front of you either… because I’m a boy, and boys don’t cry. But sometimes my heart hurts so much because I don’t have what other kids have… and then I just want to cry, quietly, where no one can see me… not even my mom.’
‘When they see me cry, they laugh even harder. “You’re a boy – why are you crying?”
But, Auntie, does it matter if you’re a boy or a girl when your heart is in pain? When your heart hurts, you cry.’
When a nine-year-old speaks like this, there is something truly brave in his words – something that deserves respect. A real Georgian spirit. Can you imagine how strong this boy must be?
The truth is, those tears weren’t just about his friends. They were the pain of realizing that something so simple, something every other child takes for granted, is completely out of reach for him – because his family lives far below the poverty line.
Don’t mistake their house for a cowshed. This is the only shelter the Zurabishvili family has.
This is the Zurabashvili family from the village of Mashavera, in the Dmanisi district. This poverty is nothing like the kind people complain about in the city – about small salaries or old phones.
This is poverty that strips away everything human.
Here the children have no toys, no books, not even proper clothes for the season. They fall asleep on broken beds, wake up in the cold, and go to school empty-handed.

Just imagine living in a house where water leaks from almost every corner, where it was already so cold back in September that spending the winter here will be nothing short of a battle for survival.
Gionest’s mother, Manushak, works the land. They have a small garden where they grow vegetables and sometimes beans.
She sells some at the market and preserves the rest for winter – but it’s never enough to feed the family.
Their father, Merab, is a pensioner and hasn’t been able to work for years because of his age. He is a broken man.
They also have a daughter, Mariam, who is 13. She is so quiet, almost withdrawn.
‘I don’t like to talk. What can I say? We have nothing. I had a phone once, but it broke. We don’t have a computer, nothing. All my classmates study with computers… and we don’t have one.’
The family lives only on Merab’s pension and social allowance. And of course, no Georgian will be surprised to hear that it isn’t enough for anything – least of all when there are children in the house.
Dear friends of the Fund, it is hard to put into words – or even in photographs – the full depth of this family’s suffering. Being in their home, you feel it so strongly that the sadness of these children stays with you long after you leave.
In Dmanisi it is already cold, and yet the boy is still in summer shorts. You understand why.
They truly need our help. They have nothing: no washing machine, no proper fridge, no decent TV, no wardrobes.

Under their beds, they’ve placed wooden doors to keep them from collapsing completely. Water drips from the ceiling, cold drafts blow through broken windows. Often they don’t even have firewood to light the stove.
Winter is coming – and this family, especially the nine-year-old boy, desperately needs our support. He deserves a warm home, proper meals, and a good bicycle. Don’t you agree?”
