A mother’s heart doesn’t need the harsh truth. It keeps hoping

REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS TO GET CLOSER TO THE WORK OF MERCY!

“But I still hope and ask the Lord for my Sandrico”

Sandro is 13 years old, and he is not afraid of anything: neither angry street dogs, nor cars that race at crazy speed along the highway. If you let Sandro go out of the gate alone, he will go straight towards his death with a smile on his face. Therefore, Giorgi keeps his eye on him.

Giorgi, the younger brother, knows how to change diapers to his older brother, how to feed him, how to entertain him. Sandro has a severe form of Down syndrome. Sandro cannot talk, he cannot eat or dress on his own. Even Sandro’s classmates in the day center where he goes to study have learned at least something – to sing, draw, talk. But Sandro did not learn anything. His brain is “frozen” and does not either progress or regress.

His poor mother Darejan would have embraced the whole world if he had uttered even a word, even one word! Maybe he will say it today? “God, please help, I beg you! And let my husband get well,” – Darejan asks in front of the home icon. In the most difficult situations, the Lord and kind people saved them.

Once we have already helped the Grigolia family, they still thank and bless us for that. But a family with a seriously ill child needs funds and help all the time.

– Giorgi, while your mom went to get medications for Sandro, tell us how you take care of your brother?

Giorgi (12 years old): Sandro can’t eat on his own, I’ll give him food now. He only drinks tea himself and likes to bite bread. I fried potatoes for him – this is what he likes most of all. I give him soup, borscht, porridge, well, we have it for lunch. My brother is very fond of sweets. When it happens that we have cookies, he comes to me, leads me by the hand to the closet and shows me that he wants me to give him some. I give him, no matter – I can do without cookies.

– He can’t take it himself?

Giorgi: He’s just like a baby. He has the mind of a one-year-old child. I feel so sorry for my brother. I keep asking God to teach him to talk at least a little bit. Sandro is a good boy, the kindest and golden one. (Kisses his brother)

Mom takes him to the Lampari day center. There is a psychologist, a teacher. They teach them to draw, to sing songs. My brother has been attending classes for seven years, but he cannot hold a pencil in his hand. And other children have already learned everything. Mom gets very upset.

He sits there alone and sways from side to side. It is very difficult to photograph Sandro, you know. All shoots get spoiled when he swings. When he hears a song about a birthday, he becomes very happy. He takes one of the children by the hand – like let’s swing together. He doesn’t sing or dance. But my mom still takes him there.

“Who is my sweetest brother? Guess who! This is Sandro, my golden boy!”

– Do you go for a walk with your brother?

Giorgi: No, I’m very afraid that he will run away. He doesn’t obey me in the street. When I scold, well, a little bit, he immediately makes an offended face. Or when I tell him not to go down our old ladder, it staggers – he gets offended as well, he wants to cry. He is braver than me – he rushes into the street, he is not afraid of anything at all. He does not feel danger. I keep an eye on him all the time. I wash his hands, I tie the laces on his shoes, I change diapers to him, I play with him.

– How many diapers does Sandro need per day?

Giorgi: A lot – 5 or 6 pieces for sure. He is afraid of the toilet. We wanted to teach him to use it, but he got so scared – he could not calm down. Sandro needs the 7th size, very often it is not available in the local pharmacies. And the supply that you gave us is over. And the money is gone. One pack of diapers costs 14 GEL. Shouldn’t the poor boy be without a diaper?

– What a practical man you are – you know everything that your brother needs.

Giorgi: He needs a new jacket. Well, he is not hungry anymore. Now I have to play ball with him, okay? He loves playing ball. He also loves when I blow up balloons for him. Do you happen to have a balloon? I would show you something.

– Oh, no. We’ll bring it next time.

“Get ready, bro. I’m going to throw now!”

Giorgi: “Wow, wow, wow, catch it, catch, don’t let it fall!”

(Darejan comes back from the pharmacy, and we continue the conversation with her).

– Darejan, Giorgi told us how much does a pack of diapers cost. Where do you get that money?

Darejan: From the meager amount that we get from the state – Sandro’s pension (250 GEL) and social allowance for two children (200 GEL). It’s our budget for food as well and for everything we can afford or not. We don’t have any other money. I took medications on credit.

My husband is unemployed now. May I ask for something? Maybe someone from a large number of friends of the Fund, will offer him a job? But he should avoid heavy load. The doctors forbade him from strong stress after he got ill.

– What happened to your husband?

Darejan: Besik has had this problem for two years now. He used to deliver bread to the regions. One day he came home with a red face. We measured his blood pressure – it was 300. The ambulance took him to hospital. When they examined him, they found he had  narrowed blood vessels. Without medications he has high blood pressure and dizziness. My husband needs treatment, but we have no money for that. He takes medications from time to time. That’s why I ask him not to take hard work. I’m afraid for him. He still goes if the neighbors call him for a part-time job: sawing firewood or something else. What else to do? In a house where a sick child is, there are always some needs.

Even the barracks do not look as severe as this room with no coziness at all

– How did you take the news that you had a special child – with Down syndrome?

Darejan: I had a c-section. And then the doctors didn’t show me my baby for two days. They brought babies to everyone to feed, but not to me. I got nervous. The pediatrician was kind and gentle. He told me: “Your baby is a gift from God. You are a special mom.” But at that moment, even these gentle words caused me fear and tears … He was completely helpless, he could not even latch on to my breast. He is still completely helpless. But I loved him and love him more than life. I keep hoping for something. Even for tiny changes. At least for some changes.

You know, we had to take Sandro to the main psychiatric hospital for a check-up every two years before to continue getting pension. And so, when we went there once again, they told me: “You may not bring him here until he turns eighteen. Everything is clear with him – the state does not change.” My Sandro is 13 now. My God, it hurt so much, it really hurt. (Suddenly starts crying.) I seem to know everything, but I am still waiting for a miracle.

(Looks at me with teary eyes. It also brings me to tears. We keep silent…)

Darejan: Maybe I’m stupid? But, if a speech therapist worked with him, maybe my boy would say something? There is no speech therapist in Samtredia. There is a long way to go to Kutaisi, and we have no means for that.

– What do you believe in, Darejan, what do you hope for?

Darejan: I believe in our Lord, and I thank Him every day. It’s not like I recall Him when I need something. Every day I pray and give thanks. In our family He comes first.

He has helped me so many times! Sandro once had a fever. And we were supposed to get pension only in one week. The Lord heard my prayer. Suddenly a distant relative of Beso called us and transferred us money. I immediately rushed to the pharmacy and bought Benet for the throat and paracetamol.

Or, when my son fell ill with psoriasis, and all his skin got covered with plaques: his legs, arms, and face. And his skin bled. Didn’t the Lord make so that everything would be resolved successfully? After a year and a half, the disease was gone. The emigrants helped me then. May God grant them well-being and let them come back to their homeland in peace. Was not it the will of the Lord that your Fund helped us more, than our relatives did?

“Come on, Sandrico, let’s take a walk before I start doing my homework”

– What did you dream about when you were young? And how lucky are you in life?

Darejan: I am an ordinary person. And I dreamed of simple things: a kind-hearted, warm husband, an understanding mother-in-law. I’ve never been crazy about money and gold. My dream came true completely – I met good people.

I was visiting my relative. There I was, serious and very shy, and Besik saw me. Everyone danced, but I didn’t. It turned out that we both were born on the same day, in the same year – November 14, 1982. It’s destiny. Besik offered me to run away with him – now or never. (Smiles). We have been husband and wife for 15 years. He gives me strength, he supports me a lot. “Well-done, you are a mother heroine. You are bringing up our children well,” – he often tells me. I know that very often fathers do not want to look after even healthy children.

– But you can’t live without money. How do you feel now about what you said and what you thought when you were young? Today you permanently need money for a child.

Darejan: I ask God to give us the most necessary things: bread, sugar, diapers. I need nothing for myself. Since God gave me a difficult situation, he will also show the way how to overcome it. God will always give a piece of bread to my children, and good people will not leave us.

– But you need not only diapers and foodstuffs. Please share your problems with us.

Giorgi: Sandro and I sleep on a broken bed. Mom props it up with a chair, otherwise we will collapse from there at night. All my sides hurt. Sandro’s too, but he can’t say, he just whimpers.

Darejan (sights): The frame of this bed broke. There are so many things to do in this house. Refrigerator, TV went out of order and can’t be repaired. Here are bare stone walls and floor, roof is in a terrible state. We can’t heat the house. Sandro often catches a cold.

Darejan: “I propped up the corner of the bed with a chair, and put a board in the middle, because the frame is broken”

Two children sleep on this lumpy mattress.
It’s hard to keep one’s back straight on this roller coaster!

– Does this house belong to you, or you rent it?

Darejan: This is the house of my husband’s late grandmother. This is how we live, after we settled here fifteen years ago. We couldn’t set up our home We haven’t purchased anything. This house is not registered as ours.

Everything in this old house is in need of repair – starting with the stairs and ending with the roof.

With a roof like this, you only need to pray for good weather!

– Giorgi, what would you change in your life if you could?

Giorgi: First, so that Sandro could talk. Secondly, to change this terrible bed. Also, so that I could attend the vocal classes. I really love Georgian folk songs and I sing. But my parents have no money for that, so I do not even ask.

– What do we live for, in your opinion?

Giorgi (with no doubts)To do good. I helped the elderly people in our village. If God gave us foodstuffs, we shared sugar, bread

– What did you do good today?

Giorgi: I babysat Sandro. This is my everyday good deed. You must be cheerful – he does not like sad faces. And I am cheerful for the sake of Sandro. Even if I am sad.

“He so wants to go out far away for walk! He always looks there. We won’t go further, Sandro”

Friends, Giorgi is only 12 years old, and he, without hesitation, answered the question of what is worth living for. We, too, can fill our day with meaning by helping the Grigolia’s family. We can make Giorgi and his parents not just pretend to smile for the sake of Sandro, but actually smile – if we treat their needs and concerns with all our hearts. They need food, lots of diapers, clothes, new beds, a TV, a bike for a teenager. Giorgi dreams of attending singing classes. He fearfully awaits February 26, his birthday. What if he’ll get disappointed again? Father of the family really needs a job – he will take on whatever he can.

Let’s support this family with our sincere care and love. You can also visit them in person at: Samtredia Municipality, village Sajavakho.

Every time you can help someone, just do it and rejoice that God answers someone’s prayers through you!

Let’s show our mercy and make them believe that miracles happen, that they can live in a warm and cozy home and have a lot of food! They believe in us. Don’t let them down. Show them what generous people live in Georgia

We are sure that all together we will manage to give them unforgettable moments.

Please don’t forget to repost our story. Let your friends know about the grief of this family! It’s extremely important!

Sandro! My dear! Look what cool gifts we have!
REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS TO GET CLOSER TO THE WORK OF MERCY!

“They sent us the most delicious cookies!”

“Sandro! My dear! Look what cool gifts we have! I know, you will be happy. Well, you won’t be able to say anything, but your heart will beat faster when you see delicious yogurts,” says Giorgi to his brother. He is trying to hold all the goodies together in his hands and at the same time show them to his brother properly: “These are cookies, look. They are delicious, and there are enough for both of us. A lot for you, and a little for me.” Then Giorgi firmly takes Sandro’s hand and leads him to the new TV set. As he explained to me, he wants to teach his brother to turn it on and off using the remote control.

“Look, what a cool TV! You switch it on this way. It’s easy”

It’s a real holiday in the Grigolia’s family. And there were you, true friends of our Fund, who gave them this holiday!
Sandro Grigolia is a 13-year-old boy. He was born with Down syndrome. As they say, he is a “sunny child” and he radiates warmth and love, like the sun. But he constantly needs warmth and love in return. His younger brother Giorgi tries to take care of him. The family is having a very hard time. They need the help and support of kind people like air.

“It’s his favorite food. I feel how happy he is”

Our Fund published a post about the Grigolia family on March,11. Follow the link to read a sad story of Sandro and Giorgi.
– Giorgi, are you happy with the gifts?
Giorgi (12-year-old): I am happy indeed. I feel Sandro is happy too and I feel happy for that also. When I feed him with these yummies he comes to a good mood.
– Do you need to feed him?
Giorgi: Sure! He can’t eat on his own. He’s like a baby. I must always take care of him. He is my brother! I love him very much!
– Giorgi, which present did you like the most?
Giorgi: A TV set. Sandro and I watch it together. I turn on Georgian songs. I love listening to songs! (Sings.) And Sandro loves too. At this time, he always smiles, and he also wants to sing. He just can’t yet. But I believe that someday he will become able to.

“I will find Georgian songs and let you all listen”

Darejan (Sandro’s and Giorgi’s mom): We were also very happy about a new bed. The children slept on a broken one. I placed a chair under it so they wouldn’t fall. It was impossible to fix it.
Giorgi: When I saw the new bed, I immediately shouted “Hurrah!” We will get rid of these barricades and sleep like real men!
– What do you mean “like real men”?
Giorgi: Freely! You can roll here or there. You won’t fall anyway. It’s cool!

Giorgi: “It’s also good that there are holidays now, because I’ll sleep so sweetly on this bed that I’ll be late to school”

– Darejan, how has your life changed after our Fund published a post about you?
Darejan: First of all, I want to thank the people who are friends with your Fund. They gave me back my faith and gave me hope. We really needed all these things, these foodstuffs, medications. But these are just things! They wear out over time. And the food will run out. But the main gift will remain forever!
– What gift do you mean?
Darejan: My faith in goodness and the hope that kind people will never let your children, my children – all our children starve. So, I want to tell everyone that this is not just help! It is not only about the fact that you brought someone a TV, someone a chest of drawers, and someone food. This is spiritual salvation. This is a helping hand that you can confidently take on! When there were no positive developmental changes in Sandriko, when the doctors told us not to come back until his adulthood, everything died in me, as if my heart had been taken out. The need and the thought that I could not even buy diapers for such a child were killing me. I lost any hope… More precisely, it was torn out of me along with my heart! And now, when I felt your support, I again heard the beating of my heart, and hope came to life along with it.

“Sunny” boy – 13-year-old Sandro

– We are happy to see your optimistic mood! Surely you, like other families, received calls after the publication of the post, many people from different parts of Georgia visited you to provide help. Perhaps you have made many new friends? Which one would you single out?
Darejan: All of them are dear to me. I want to say thank you to everyone.
– Did anyone from the local authorities respond?
Darejan: Yes, they promised to provide us with a one-time assistance. But most importantly, they enrolled me in the employment program for socially disadvantaged persons. Now I work as a janitor in a kindergarten. I have a job and I also keep getting the social allowance because it is a special program. It would be nice if my husband was also employed. He’s sick, but he still can work. If there only was job…
Giorgi: Mom, is there any job for me too? Maybe we can ask for some job for kids? I would help you and dad.
– No, Giorgi, you are too young yet and your job is to study well.
Giorgi: I will study and then I will work a lot to pamper Sandriko with delicious yogurts every day.
