“You can’t imagine how difficult it is to look at your child crawling on his knees, trying to stand on his feet and crying because he cannot take a step. Help him get up from his knees,” said the unfortunate mother Ek, whose youngest son suffers from cerebral palsy and terrible kidney disease. For 10 years, the mother of three beautiful children, Eka, has not been at peace – all three of her children are sick …
10-year-old Luka, 7-year-old Lika and 3-year-old Rezi were born seven months old and each of them has its own sad story. Eka herself will tell us her sad story:
– Pregnancy and childbirth are the most wonderful moments in a woman’s life. Nine months to carry a son or daughter under my heart, to feel them in myself, to cherish every moment … I have been dreaming about this all my life … But, I have not carried through any of my pregnancies to the end … And Luka, Lika, and Rezi were born prematurely. All three by the will of God were born at the seventh month of pregnancy. This was the reason for our troubles …
Luke and Lika are a little behind in development, they cannot speak … Especially Luke. He is already in third grade, but so far he cannot relate two words together.
But our biggest pain is the youngest Rezi. He has two very serious diagnoses: cerebral palsy and impaired renal function – nephrotic syndrome. Due to paralysis, he can neither crawl nor walk. He stays or crawls on his knees for days, when we take him outside, he tries to stand on his feet, but immediately falls to his knees. This is such a stress … Do not bring anyone to experience this on yourself …
We noticed Rezi’s problems when he was 4 months old. He could not sit down, roll over. Kind people helped to conduct an examination for free, and the doctor told us that Rezi had cerebral palsy. Rezi assigned disability. Then the Ministry of Health helped us a lot and funded several courses of special rehabilitation therapy. But it is needed constantly despite the fact that from time to time the Ministry of Health finances therapy, this is not enough …
“Eka, tell me, will the operation help Rezi?”
– Unfortunately no. A year ago, he was examined by a doctor from Ukraine who arrived in Tbilisi and said that Rezy’s operation cannot be done, it will only get worse. To alleviate his suffering can only rehabilitation therapy, for which we do not have enough money.
But I did not bother you just because of this. The worst thing is that Rezi has a very big kidney problem. A year ago – in May 2019, he woke up with terribly swollen eyes. We immediately took him to a doctor and we were not released from the hospital anymore, as the condition of the child was so bad that every minute was dear.
Rezi was tested, and it turned out that he had a very high protein in the urine, urination was delayed, and a catheter had to be inserted. Three times we were in the hospital. The last time – in September 2019, we were told that we need a kidney biopsy. This is a very expensive procedure and it was funded by the Tbilisi Mothers Fund. We were diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome and prescribed a relatively cheap drug, Tacrolimus, in the hope that it will help. Thanks to God, the body of Rezi took this medicine, otherwise we would need another very expensive drug that would have to be bought abroad. Of course, they could not do this.
– What is the state of Rezi now? What is it and your main problem?
– Three times a month he is tested for tacrolimus concentration in the blood and each procedure costs 85 GEL. And the Tacrolimus preparation itself costs 80 GEL and lasts for only 12 days. We need funds specifically for this drug, consultation with a nephrologist and tests. This costs us 600-650 GEL per month. So far we are talking about six months of treatment, but it can last even longer.
We also need diapers for Rezi, since we cannot teach him to the pot — he cannot sit on the pot due to paralysis.
I beg you, help! We need money for medicines and tests! Without them, my son will die! Please do not look away from our misfortune, imagine how a small, innocent child suffers! Not only is he doomed to life on his knees, but also this ill-fated kidney disease, constant hospitals and tests …
Do not leave my blood, help buy medicine so that he does not suffer!
– Calm down, Eka, we will do everything for little Rezi. Tell us how you yourself manage to overcome all this.
– It’s very hard to watch your children suffer! I, my husband Demeter and mother-in-law Leah cry every day, seeing how difficult it is for our children to have everything in life: Luka and Leah speak poorly, and Rezi suffers from kidney pain and paralysis. What is it like when two of your children cannot clearly tell you what they want, and the third cannot get up off their knees …
 – Do you believe in God and that he will help you overcome all difficulties?
– Yes, our whole family is a believer. Children do not go to bed without prayer. I do not often manage to go to church, but in my heart I pray constantly, I ask God to have mercy
go over my children, do not leave them and protect them from all troubles. – Do you believe that help can come from outside?
“Of course, I believe, after all, strangers have helped us all these years, the same doctors, the Mothers Foundation, people who have transferred at least 1 lari to us … I am extremely grateful to them … I don’t even know what words I would say to them … If if I knew their names, I would simply rush to their knees and thank you for every lari, for every word of prayer that they said in the name of my children …
– Did state structures help you?
– Yes, I can’t say anything bad about this. We often turn to the Ministry of Health with a request to fund an analysis for the concentration of tacrolimus in Rezi’s blood. Sometimes they give us money, and sometimes they refuse. The Ministry of Health also finances the services of a speech therapist for the older children of Luke and Lika. Once every four months, the district government allocates 100 GEL as a poor family.
And the Tbilisi Mothers Foundation helped us twice, we are grateful to them for having managed to do a kidney biopsy from Rezi. The third time they have already refused us, they said that there are a lot of people who need help. They apologized and refused.
– Does any of your relatives help you?
– There is nobody to help us. While my father was alive, he was our support both financially and morally, but several years ago he died. My mother needs help herself. Our mother-in-law lives with us, she is sick, she has problems with her joints and she has difficulty walking. She herself needs support and a huge amount of medicine. So, we have one hope – for God and good people. But she is an extraordinary woman! Despite the fact that she is my mother-in-law, I call her “mother” and she really became my second mother. We overcome all troubles together; she takes extraordinary care of her grandchildren and of us. My Rezy sleeps with her in the same bed, does not move away from her …
– Tell us about how you met with your spouse and how you started a family.
– I have a very loving husband. And, despite the fact that Demeter stole me, I love him with all my heart! And it happened like this: I was visiting my uncle, and Demeter came there too – he knew my uncle. Demeter immediately laid eyes on me, I also paid attention to him. We made friends, called back. Once, I was going to my girlfriend’s birthday, and Demeter offered to give me a ride. On the way, the car turned into a completely different place and instead of a friend I ended up in Kakheti … But, I do not regret anything, thanks to God we created a good family and if it weren’t for trouble with our children, we could be called a happy family. We love each other.
– Could you suggest that your life will turn out in this way?
– Of course not. Nobody thinks and does not suppose such a thing. I would never have thought that all my children would be seven months old, that they would have such health problems, that we would live in such poverty that my children would need everything. I presented my life in a completely different way. My husband and I wanted to have many children, dreamed about how they would grow, achieve success step by step …. Now it’s hard for me to talk about it.
Everything turned out differently – my children are suffering and we have to look at their suffering. Rezy is mentally developed beyond his years, he is interested in everything, he wants to do everything himself and cries when he does not succeed …
– Eka, tell me what funds you live on.
– Rezi has a disability pension of 220 lari, we also have social benefits for each family member – together 420 lari. Total 640 GEL. That’s all. My husband and I do not work, I look after children and mother-in-law, and my husband has a heart condition and he cannot work in hard work, and he cannot find other work.
– How do you grab this money for everything?
– Not enough, that’s why we ask for help. Literally, everything goes to Rezi’s medicines and mother-in-law, to Rezi’s tests and diapers. Not even enough. We already forgot about clothes and shoes … We carry it over kind people. We mainly eat pasta, buckwheat, lean soups … It’s very difficult for us to eat food, we used to borrow food nearby in the store, but we got such a debt that we were refused. I won’t even talk about meat and fruits … They weren’t even on our New Year’s table …
– Tell us about your living conditions.
– In this apartment, where we now live, we entered without permission. Before that, they lived in a rented apartment, but it was difficult to call it an apartment – a real basement with rats. We paid 100 lari for it, but we couldn’t pay it, and the hostess kicked us out.
About the former military town in Varketili, we were told by relatives who themselves also settled here without permission. Now, compared to the previous basement, we live relatively better. Although our current apartment needs serious repairs, everything is dilapidated, and the doors and windows need to be replaced. But it’s a sin to complain to us, we have as many as two rooms and a kitchen. There is no need to go to the toilet either – we made an extension.
Gas is not supplied to the town and we have everything on electricity, we cook food on electricity, we are heated by electricity. Rezi’s doctor forbade us to put a wooden stove; he said that it was harmful to Rez
and now we are heated by air conditioning, take on credit, which a relative helped us.
– Eka, let us talk to your children.
“Luka will not be able to talk, so he does not talk, and Rezi still does not know how.” Therefore, you can talk with Lika, she will tell you everything for three (laughs Eka)
– Hello, Lika! Tell me how you live
– Hello, aunt! I’ll tell you everything. I want a doll that talks. I want me to tell her something, and she answered me.
“What do your brothers want?”
– Luke can’t talk. He is a brawler, he is always fighting with me. He has a bike, but he doesn’t put me on it. If you buy him a new two-wheeled one, he will give me his old one. No, no, better buy me a new one, pink!
– And Rez?
“And Rezi loves the ball and chewing gum.” All the time she asks her mom for chewing gum … Luka and I love them too.
– Lika, do you go to school?
– Yes, Luka and I go to school, but I study better, I already know how to read. I have such a good teacher … I want to be like her and when I grow up, I will also teach children.
– Do you have a girlfriend?
– Yes. Her name is Lizzie. She is beautiful and always protects me. When the boys offend me, she protects me.
– Do you go to dance, or go in for sports?
– No, I only go to school. Luka and I love to dance, but mom and dad can’t take us there, it’s expensive … We sometimes dance at home. And we don’t like sports … It’s better to dance, the girl is beautiful, when she dances – the dress is spinning, her hair is developing …
– Do you like fairy tales and cartoons?
– Yes, I love the fairy tale about Little Red Riding Hood and I watched a cartoon about her. She has such a beautiful dress and a beautiful red hat.
And Rezi and I love it when dad tells us a fairy tale about Comblé. He does it so funny, especially when he mumbles like Comblet cows, when they were stolen by an evil uncle …
– Lika, are you friends with your brothers?
– Luka sometimes offends me, but we still play with each other. And Rezi is very good, he always wants to play, but often cries …
– Eka, back to you. Tell us what you need now besides medicines and financial assistance.
“We most need beds, bedding, children’s clothes and shoes, food …. For all that kind people can help us, we will be very grateful.
Our family of six has only two beds. On one, more or less normal, the mother-in-law sleeps with a three-year-old Rez. And Luke and Lika are sleeping with me and Demeter on a collapsed bed. Our bed is backed by bricks so that we do not fail.
Of household appliances, we have a washing machine, refrigerator, TV and air conditioning.
I would like a computer for children. We have one school beech, which was given to children at school, but one has deteriorated, and now that the lessons are online we have a big problem. Luke and Lika have lessons at the same time, but there is only one beech …
We really need clothes for children. It’s summer, but there’s nothing to dress them with …
– Eka, what are you dreaming of?
– I only dream that Rezi was healthy. So that the medicine does not end, since one missed day for him may be the last day …

Mommy, wizards have come to us!

“Mommy, mommy! Come quickly! Our wizards have come to us!”- 8-year-old Lika and her 10-year-old brother Luka cheered us so loudly that the whole street learned about our arrival. The children have changed a lot for the last months! They keep smiling and their eyes shine of happiness!

Just six months ago, when we first visited the family of Eka and Demetre Rusiashvili, hopelessness and sadness reigned around. The youngest child – 3-year-old Rezi – was born with cerebral palsy suffering from kidney disease – nephrotic syndrome.Lika and Luka have hearing and speech disorder. The efforts of the poor parents were focused on supporting the health of their children. They had no money for the anything else…

Eka, the desperate mother, addressed the Chernovetskyi Fund for help, hoping that kind people would respond. The main character of the post  “Lap life” https://chernovetskyifund.ge/en/projects/finished/578-rusiashvil/description/ was little Rezi. But you, our true friends, did not leave unattended any member of this long-suffering family, proving again that people living in our beautiful Georgia are most generous and large-hearted!

8-year-old Lika immediately took the initiative.

Lika: You know, we have lots of friends now! We even were on TV! Mommy was so beautiful…Me too, of course… Mom said it was because of you that people from TV learned about us and came to our place. I knew, I knew you were wizards!

They brought us so many gifts! It’s Kato, my talking doll. Do you remember, you wrote that I wanted a talking doll? Lady Mariam have read it and brought me the doll, and balls for Luka and Rezi, they had dreamed about.

Now Kato sleeps with me in our new bed – Kato and me on the first storey and Luka on the second. When you brought us the new bed, we argued for a long time who was going to sleep on the second storey! We almost got into fight, but then me and Kato decided that it would be better for us to sleep in the lower bed, since Kato could fall from the upper one …

– Hope you did not get into fight because of the computer?

Lika: A little bit. Now we don’t fight anymore, we play together and we even allow Rezi to sit with us, however, we don’t let him press the buttons, so that he wouldn’t spoil anything. He is too little yet.

– Let me ask your mother about the present Rezi liked most.

Eka: Rezi likes everything! He is crazy about the ball, Mariam Berdzenishvili brought him. He is so happy when he rolls it and crawls after it. However, he did not get sweets and candies you brought, because he cannot eat sweets due to his kidney disease. But I think Lika and Luka have had enough of them! I think they haven’t seen so many sweets together for their life.

– Eka, tell me what happened after we published the article about you?

– A lot of people read the article. The first call was almost the next day! People called asking about Rezi’s condition, about the help we needed. Once they even transferred some money to our account – 100 GEL.

Then Mariam Berdzenishvili came to our place and brought the children very nice presents – a talking Doll for Lika and balls for Luka and Rezi, and lots of food as well. She gave us money too.

I can’t describe how happy Lika was when she saw the doll! I still remember her happy eyes! Then we got presents from you. Not only the children but me too started jumping with joy seeing the beds! I was so much happy! You remember where and how we used to sleep: every night my husband Demetre used to put plenty of bricks to make the bed more stable so that we did not fall down.

And now me and Rezi have a new sturdy bed, and Lika and Luka have their bunk bed.

– And what is the TV story that Lika has mentioned?

– After your publication they called us from “Obiektivi” TV asking a permission to take a video about our family. Then they called us from “Imedi” TV, “Prime Show” got interested in us. They also came and made a video about us. I am so grateful to them! Both “Obiektivi” and “Prime show” brought us lots of food and toys for the children.

All thanks to you! Your article about us has opened the hearts of the people, made them compassionate, willing to help a neighbor. As my daughter says: “You are wizards!”

Look at their faces! They are happy! I can’t find the words to express my gratitude for the joy I see in their eyes, for the hope and trust in people, their kindness that our family felt. Only the Lord can reward you, and we can only pray and remember each of you who has shown at least a little bit of love and compassion …

– Was there any feedback on our article from the local authorities? Have they become interested in your condition and have they helped you in any way?

– There was absolutely no feedback from them. Probably they don’t read such posts or they don’t care about the life of their compatriots. I don’t know what to say.

– Eka, how is your family doing now? Are there any unsolved issues left?

– The most important thing is Rezi’s health. We went to the hospital again a couple of weeks ago. His kidney problems caused swelling and his blood sugar rose. Thank God, the status of a disadvantaged family gives us the opportunity to take a number of test and consultations for free. But we still have to pay for some special consultations: for instance with nephrologists and ophthalmologists, which Rezi needs to take regularly and they cost 50-60 GEL each.

It’s an incredible amount for us. Nobody works in our family, and the social allowance and Rezi’s pension can’t be enough for everything you need. My husband Demetre is seriously ill, he has heart problems. An excessive strain causes shortness of breath. My mother-in-law is sick too, she walks with the help of two walking sticks. She has sore joints.

As you know, Lika and Luka are problematic kids, they have developmental disorders. Not long ago, Luka was diagnosed an auditory nerve damage. So, we had to address Tbilis Townhall asking them to finance a hearing aid which cost 4600 GEL. To be honest, I did not expect they would satisfy my request, but I was wrong, they fully covered the cost and Luka will have it soon.

That’s how we live, one thing next to another. You see the condition of our house. We have been arbitrary occupying this dilapidated building, we have built the annex with WC, made some renovations inside. But we cannot change the windows and doors – they are all rotten. There are draughts inside even when the doors and windows are closed. We hoped that your Facebook article would make the local authorities pay attention to us and help us somehow, but, alas, they didn’t. We only hope that our new friends, your readers, will help. Maybe someone can help us with second-hand doors and windows. Winter is coming, and I am scared of how we will cope.

We can’t put a wood stove because of Rezi’s disease. The doctor says that it’s very bad for his kidneys. So, we have to heat the house with a split system air conditioner, and it is almost impossible to keep the house warm with such windows.

You see, we have to ask you for help again. Forgive us. I did not want to complain, but still did.

– Eka, don’t worry, it’s okay. Now you have so many friends, there will be someone to respond.

– That’s why I feel so awkward. You have done so many things for me, and I keep on asking for help and sorting out my problems. But God sees everything and knows everything!

Lika and Luka managed to go to school this year only due to the help of kind and compassionate people. The children had no clothes, no footwear and notebooks. If it were not for their speech-therapist form the “First Step” (“Pirveli Nabiji”) day center and some other people I would not be able to send them to school. They brought my children new clothes and fully equipped them for school. Thanks them a lot!

Thank you all! The joy and happiness that you and your readers, our new friends, gave my children will return to each of you! Because the kindness does not just pass unnoticed, it will be payed back a hundredfold! God bless you!

***

As you see, dear friends, despite your help and support the misfortunes of the Rusiashvili family do not finish. Rezi still needs the treatment, and they are catastrophically short of money. The meager allowance and the little boy’s disability pension are not enough for the family to survive. Every day the parents face a dilemma: whether they should buy medications for Rezi or food for the children.

Let’s listen to our heart again and lend a helping hand to the Rusiashvili family, let us make their dreams come true.

If you have a heavy heart because of everyday problems or unresolved issues, as a distraction just see our posts on Facebook, or better dial the number of any of our beneficiaries. Call them and you will forget about your problems. Because they are nothing in comparison with the problems of those to whom you opened your good heart and came to help at a most difficult moment of their life.

Our problems are nothing if compared… Here are true misfortunes, in front of your eyes! Just thank the Lord for what you have. You are the happiest person in the world! Remember this and help those in need.

From time to time, look through the stories of unhappy people on our website, talk to them. Every time you dial the phone of an unhappy person, God is blessing you! For sure! Go on helping these families! This is the best service to the Lord!

Your kindness is a chance for yourself to be happy in everything!

Friends, thanks again to all!
