Khatuna is 29 years old. She can hardly remember when her foot stepped on the ground because too much time has passed. “Even in my sleep I can’t remember how I walked,” Khatuna says with resentment. “But I remember how great it was!” Her mother became her legs, her mother became her hands. Her mom became the whole world for poor Khatuna. She has no friends, no one she can talk to. Her peers treat her like a baby, children shy away and point fingers at her… It all hurts her so much… That has killed the tortured heart of Khatuna and her guardian angel – her mother Darejan – so many times.

REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS TO GET CLOSER TO THE WORK OF MERCY
Mother has been carrying her little daughter in her arms for 29 years now
Khatuna is 29 years old.
Khatuna will not be able to live even a day without her mother
Recording our interview was rather difficult. First, Darejan cried, and Khatuna calmed her, then Khatuna began to sob. Mom pressed her to her heart, walked around the room and calmed her daughter.
– Darejan, when did you find out about your daughter’s illness? Did her problems start since birth?
Darejan: Khatuna is our first child. You cannot imagine how much joy she brought to our family. I was so happy even though I was still a child myself. I became a mother at 22. I was unexperienced, afraid of everything. I fed her milk, and from that moment the problems began. She got poisoned by milk, she was vomiting. They thought it was because of me. Maybe I ate something wrong. But it didn’t stop.
– Did you go to the doctor?
Darejan: Yes, of course! The doctor said that my milk was too fatty, and it was better to feed the child with formula. So I did. When the time came to give her porridge, it turned out that she perceived some types of porridge normally, but semolina porridge caused her to vomit.
Khatuna’s entire body is affected by the disease.
Khatuna: Mom, I don’t remember that! I don’t even remember how I walked… Have I ever been like others?
Darejan: Khatuna has a very rare disease called celiac disease. This disease affects less than one percent of the world’s population. When person has this disease, the body cannot digest the gluten that grains contain. A person simply gets poisoned when eating! But who knew about that 30 years ago in Georgia? No one. So, they treated her either for rickets, or for indigestion, or for the liver, or for the kidneys … But the child was getting worse. By the age of ten, her joints were already deformed, her bones had become brittle, and her spine got twisted.
“I wish I had real friends”
– When was she diagnosed with celiac disease?
Darejan: When she was 10 years old. She could not get out of bed, could not take a step, she was in pain. She screamed, cried, begged for help! But we couldn’t understand anything, we couldn’t do anything. Then, in Tbilisi, one doctor advised us to send her tests to Germany. That’s where she was diagnosed. We have been living with this diagnosis for 20 years now. Khatuna did not really go to school.
Khatuna: And I really wanted to! All the children went to school, and I stayed at home and cried … No one wanted to be friends with me!
– What are you dreaming about, Khatuna?
Khatuna: I want to walk! I want to be like everyone! Everything hurts me. My hands hurt, my legs hurt, my teeth hurt. I feel very bad… Do you know how beautifully I could walk? I walked and walked… but now I can’t. My mother “walks” me, my mother does everything for me.
“I want to remember how beautifully I walked, how I made my mother happy, but I can’t”
Darejan: Khatuna simply won’t survive without me. I devoted all my youth, all my health to my daughter. Any mother would do the same for her child. But do you know how difficult it is?
– Do you have any other children besides Khatuna?
Darejan: Two years after the birth of Khatuna, I had a son. He is healthy. But I know that he always lacked my attention, so I want to ask him to forgive me. We sent them to school together, but Khatuna could not study.
Khatuna: I can’t write and read. I can only watch TV. Sometimes funny people perform there. And I love watching movies. I love TV the most! Would you call me if I had a phone? I would talk to you!
“Mom is my legs, mom is my arms, mom is my best friend”
Who else would you talk to?
Khatuna: I would talk to other women. They speak well. And I don’t like children. They laugh at me. They say I’m not pretty. Take a picture of me now, then show it to people and I’ll talk to them too. I will tell them how everything hurts me, and I will have friends. And they will call and ask me how I feel, and I will tell them that I feel bad … And we will cry together, and then I will say that I love them! That’s why I need a phone.
– Darejan, what else do you need most of all?
Darejan: We don’t need anything but special food for Khatuna and diapers. Our income is only enough for diapers, medications. We can’t always buy gluten free products for Khatuna. The Chernovetskyi Fund has helped us many times. Every time we had a very bad time, you always appeared! It is like… You have a very close person who is always by your side. To whom you can address when you are on the verge of death, and he immediately comes to help you!
“If I have a phone, my new friends will call me and ask me how I feel!”
Khatuna: And let them call me! Let them talk to me! I really want this. I promise I won’t cry, I’ll just tell you how bad I feel, and this will make me feel good!
