“A person’s life is composed of black and white stripes, and mine is all black. Many years ago, my mother kicked me out of the house with epilepsy. Since then, I have been fighting poverty, disease, hunger! I have many other diseases in addition to epilepsy. My only income is the social allowance, but it is not enough even for one visit to the doctor.” – Ms. Karina tells us. “Why? Hasn’t there been any single bright spot in your life?” I want her to say something good. “Yes, of course – these were the people whom God sent me … Thanks to them I survived… And the Lord sent you to me – I believe in that!

REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS TO GET CLOSER TO THE WORK OF MERCY!

Well, there were also those good days when I managed to collect a lot of bottles in the street, return them and buy medications. Or when I found something “valuable” at a junkyard. This chair is from my “container” life. Someone didn’t need it and threw it away, but I could use it – so with great difficulty I still brought it here. A passer-by helped me… Probably, the Lord sent him to me…”

“Probably, there is no such disease that I don’t have…”

Karina Galoyan lives on the outskirts of Tbilisi, on the top floor of an old building. Peeling walls, leaking ceilings, things collected at the junkyard make this small apartment even more gloomy. But what a woman who has been suffering from epilepsy since childhood and was sentenced by doctors just a few years ago and got her breast amputated can do? She still has so many problems, so many illnesses bother her… As she told us herself – there is not enough paper to write everything down, there is not enough time to talk about everything…

“Eh … Will anyone find me if one day, I don’t wake up after attack, and die …”

 – Mrs. Karina, how are you?

Karina (59 years old): Eh … Well, what to say? (She waves her hand, tears flow from her eyes, I calm her down, and she continues.) I’m bad, very bad! My epileptic attacks happen more often now. Because of cancer, my chest was amputated, but I have new nodes, varicose veins, high blood pressure, goiter, sclerosis… And just recently, I was diagnosed with brain cancer. All together they knock me out. And hunger too. I am starving, I have no medications… I have no money to visit doctor! How can I go to the doctor, living in such poverty?!  When I went to the doctor, he wrote down a huge list of medications for me, but how can I buy them?! He prescribed me to eat fish and bananas. With what money can I buy fish? Have I ever eaten a banana? The prices are so high it’s scary to even come close.

“This food should be enough for me for at least two days…”

“This is my supply for the entire week…”

 – Do they finance your medications?

Karina: Yes, but only those for epilepsy. And I have an entire “bomb” of diseases in my body… Everything hurts me, sometimes it seems that I will go crazy with pain … I dream of death, but the Lord does not let me die, because he found me! I was looking for a way to Him! Prayers help me. I go to church and talk to God. I only have him.

“I have no one but God!”

 – Do you live alone?

Karina: Yes, I don’t have anyone. I was 26 years old when my mother, kicked me – her daughter who suffered epilepsy – out of our home. She forbade everyone to communicate with me. That’s how I lost my family.

 – Why did she kick you out?

Karina: Because I didn’t get married. How could I get married, when seizures happened to me here and there because of my illness? She wanted to get rid of me, and that’s how she did it.

 – And you found yourself in the street?

Karina: Yes, in the street. My friend sheltered me for the first time. Then I rented a room in a basement. I had little savings, and I also sold my personal belongings. So, I paid for rent. Then, the landlady took pity on me and stopped charging me. She took pity on me, but my mother did not… Can you imagine that? I, a daughter with epilepsy, was a burden for my mother! My kind landlady helped me claim my share from my parents and not die in the street. What could I do alone? After judicial intervention, my parents bought me this small, old apartment. The court left them no other choice, otherwise, I know for sure, they would not have done this …

 – Is you mother still alive?

Karina: No, she died last year. She died from coronavirus. In the last minutes of her life, she repented of her act. But I… I can’t forgive her. She turned my entire life into a nightmare; because of her, I was left in poverty, all alone with my illness. Probably not every mother is mother …

 – Maybe you would try to forgive her, because the Lord teaches us a lot about forgiveness.

Karina: I know! I am trying my best, dear! I only ask God to help me forgive my mother.

 – What else do you ask the Lord?

Karina: I also ask him not to let me do anything stupid. Once I passed out and woke up in a madhouse. I was told that I was lying on the rails when attendant noticed me and took me to the hospital. But I don’t remember anything.

 – Have you been in a psychiatric hospital for a long time?

Karina: No, because I’m not crazy … Sorry, my head aches … (I suggest calling an ambulance, but she asks me not to disturb anyone yet. She takes pills and continues.)

“This is a strong painkiller – they gave it to me at the pharmacy …”

 – We can continue our interview another time if you want…

Karina: No, please, don’t go, stay with me, talk to me… I forgot what you asked. I also have sclerosis. I lose things… I rarely leave my house. If I do go out, it will only be to the social canteen and the church… Sometimes I am afraid that I will forget the way home…

 – I asked you about the psychiatric hospital, about your stay there. For how long were you kept there?

Karina: I hardly remember the two weeks I spent there. I was sleeping all the time, I was “passed out” … It was terrible. When they found out that I was not crazy, but had epilepsy, they announced me on television so that my family could take me home. But where is my family? (Cries.)

 – Nobody came to take you home?

Karina: My friend of youth and my colleague. They saved me from hell…

“These photos remind me of my youth full of pain!”

– Did you work anywhere when you were young?

Karina: Oh, so much time has passed since then. Many years ago, when I was not that sick, I worked at the emergency room. But I have always had epilepsy. The head took pity on me for a long time and did not fire me. I was a nursing assistant. Then they wrote complaints about me. I needed help myself, how could I help anyone?! I always loved to work… My boss took pity on me and transferred me to the office, to the call-center… I forgot what it’s called…

– Operator?

Karina: Yes, operator. When a new manager came, I got fired. I was a burden …  I am just a burden for everyone! And then all these troubles happened to me …

 – Do you often lose consciousness?

Karina: Very often. In the last two months, attacks have become very frequent. Now, I try not to leave the house, because I have already come to my senses several times here and there. I don’t want anyone to find me covered in dust, it’s embarrassing … It’s also embarrassing to ask for alms – it’s better to stay hungry …

 – How did you learn about our Fund?

Karina: They told me in the church. Religious women have seen articles about your good deeds on the Internet. I don’t even know what the internet is…

 – What do you expect from our friends?

Karina: I am embarrassed to ask for alms, but it’s completely different with you, it’s much easier… You speak to me so warmly… Don’t go away, talk to me, today I feel very bad. If something happens to me, will you call an ambulance? Sometimes, no one understands that I need an ambulance … I lose consciousness, then come to life again – it’s strange to me that I’m still alive …

Karina Galoyan is in desperate straits. We hardly recorded an interview with her. She often forgets what she is talking about, cries, asks for help. Suffering from loneliness, she begged us to visit her more often. She said the ambulance crew were her only frequent visitors. Friends, Karina really needs our help and support now! She needs food, medications, various medical tests. Including CT of the brain.

Karina does not have normal living conditions: her ceiling is leaking, the bathrooms are in poor condition, there is no furniture, there is no normal bed. I think you will take her situation to heart, you will not push away a poor, hungry person suffering from multiple severe diseases, as her mother did many years ago. Let’s not break her heart and take away that last hope, clinging to which, she continues her life full of suffering! Let’s unite and make our small contribution to the great deeds. Let’s help those in need!

You can visit Karina and make her very happy. Her address is: Tbilisi, Avchala, 29 Libani Street, Apartment 47.
