A giant tumor already occupies 90 percent of his brain. His condition worsens with each passing day. He needs urgent surgery. This is Roma Tordia. He is 18 years old and has been in a coma for a year. Roma Tordia was once a successful professional dancer, a multiple gold medalist, a son that all of Samegrelo and Georgia were proud of. This exceptionally talented boy was predicted to have a great future. But on July 3, 2023, a tragic accident turned the sky of Samegrelo black. The thunderous news broke: “Roma was in an accident and seems to have died.” The doomed cries of his mother and grandmothers reached the heavens. Even the rocks wept for the boy who grew up as an orphan.

“I feel neither good, nor bad. I feel nothing. My only son and husband lie motionless in the cold earth of the cemetery… and here I am within these four walls,” whispers Grandma Lamara barely audibly, wiping her dry eyes. Not a single tear has been left in 17 years – she’s cried it all out. She cries, crying from within, shrouded in darkness. She wants to die, to be near those she has lost, but death seems to avoid her, and condemns her to endless torment.

Every time Gela experiences an attack, he feels like he’s saying goodbye to life.  The ambulance might not make it in time to save him.   He struggles to breathe, unable to take even a single breath in or out. An oxygen concentrator is Gela’s only chance to survive, but he doesn’t have the money to buy one. His disability pension and 30-lari social allowance can’t even cover the medications cost. Every time he has an attack, the ambulance team has to come and revive him. Friends, Gela doesn’t remember a single joyful day in his life.  He was in fourth grade when his mother got sick, and he had to take on the responsibility of caring for the family.   This little boy milked a cow and cooked meals all by himself. He’s been through so much hardship and deserves a peaceful old age and the most basic comfort.  There’s no one else he can turn to but us!  Together, we can give Gela a chance to keep living!
